mpeg-1 video

Hi,

I've got some video clips in mpeg-1 format. I'd like to edit them in iMovie, but I'm not able to import them or play them with QuickTime 7, or iMovie. Actually, I don't seem to have any applications that will play them.

Will QuickTime Pro play these? Will it export them in other formats?

If I upgrade to QuickTime Pro, will I be able to edit these clips in iMovie?

I tried downloading Mpeg Streamclip, as suggested on another thread, but that didn't work. I got a message indicating I needed some kind of QuickTime plug in that would handle mpeg-2 format, or words to that effect.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Tim

Okay, it's solved.

QuicktimeKirk nailed it in the end, though I had solved it by trial and error by then anyway.

A typo... I didn't buy streamclip. I downloaded it.

The rest of the process was not exactly intuitively obvious.

When I tried StreamClip again, I got the error message, which helped me find the URL at apple.com where I can navigate to the Apple store, where I can look for the link that makes it possible to pay for and download the Quicktime extension, which, when installed, makes it possible for the freeware utility, Streamclip, to open the video clip (apparently an mpeg-2), which then makes it possible to export the clip in a variety of formats, some of which can be opened by iMovie.

It works now. Doesn't seem like it should be so hard.

This hasn't been a happy morning, but I guess you earned your "solved" points, QK. In the end, you provided the suggestion I needed.

The server refuses to allow me to enter "solved" in reply to QuickTimeKirk's message on this thread. I've tried several times over the past two or three days. The error page I get says "contact the system administrator if the problems persist" or words to that effect.

I am logged in correctly, and I am the OP.

What do I do now?

Hi Tim,

I've been having problems with "MPEG-1" video too, downloaded a lot of archive material for collaging. "get info" says Mpeg-1 as ever VLC plays but Quicktime Pro says no deal.
(having to buy QT Pro every year is ******* me off Apple)
Is this the problem you had and if so how did you solve it?
I couldn't work it out from the entries above.

here are the dialogues:

Movie extension in folder list says: "blahblah.mpeg"

Click on it - quicktime says: "the movie could not be opened. The file is not a
movie file."

Get info says: "kind: MPEG-1 Movie"

VLC plays - QT pro does not, but since I need to muck about with it I need QT pro which is why I have to keep purchasing it every time the OS updates.

QT pro ain't very pro.

But maybe there's a reason it won't play ?

Cheers
