    here are the dialogues:

Movie extension in folder list says: "blahblah.mpeg"

Click on it - quicktime says: "the movie could not be opened. The file is not a
    movie file."

Get info says: "kind: MPEG-1 Movie"

VLC plays - QT pro does not, but since I need to muck about with it I need QT pro which is why I have to keep purchasing it every time the OS updates.

    QT pro ain't very pro.

    But maybe there's a reason it won't play ?

    Cheers

To keep the two formats separate we use two different file extensions.
    MPEG-1 = .mpg
    MPEG-2 = .mpeg
QuickTime version 7 is over 30 months old and you don't need to buy a new version with each OS upgrade. Tiger (10.4) requires version 7.
Use the Finder to duplicate the file. Change the file extension on the copy to .mpg and try again.
Use the "Info" window of VLC to read the format of the file.

Hello, I just went through that sequence but I'm still getting QT saying its "not a movie file and can't be opened."
Copied and changed the extension - dialogue came up. Checked extension in info but still no go.
    Weird.
Use QT pro for the import and export mostly of stills for animation and don't find it much use for playback these days so any alternative application suggested is welcome.

    Thanks for your post.

An improperly edited and saved MPEG-1 may be your real trouble then.
Use MPEG Streamclip (free) to fix the timecode and export to QuickTime formats or save it as a "fixed" .mpg file.

    "get info" says Mpeg-1

Where did you get that info? ...QT Player's get info can't sometimes be trusted so I always check MPEGs with MPEG Streamclip.

    Yo, Andrew,

Sorry. I don't know how to help you. There are plenty of smart and capable people on this forum.

Sadly, I'm not one of them.

    Good luck.

I have a similar problem with mpeg-1 format files and with avi format files. I went looking for the plug-in(s) at the Mac download center but didn't see anything there that would specifically solve the problem. I'm reluctant to just randomly download a bunch of software that I don't need.

Someone must have solved this problem already. Suggestions appreciated.

I am also geting this problem, I called into Tech suport, and after 2 full hours on the phone, all I got was a do a reinstall tip and we dont do support for QT Codex... your on your own, it should work.....

    Yes I did reinstall

    So heres the deal.

    Open QT

-try to open file, which is selectable, Name is ______.mpg
    -Kind Mpeg-1 Movie
QT Logo is there when you look at file as well.

Hit open and get message "The movie can not be opened. The file is not a movie File.

However my other Mac latop Powerbook G4 can open this file in QT but this new iMac will not.

PLEASE HELP! I bought this computer to work with these files editing, so unless I get this solved soon, this bad boy is going to be returned and maybe ill go over to the other side... cause I know it works there. i HATE PCs but if it means my job on the line well.

Do you have the correct version of the MPEG Playback plug-in installed in the new iMac? Is it the Intel version?

And I'd use MPEG Streamclip to get info, play and convert the file. It is more predictable than the QT Player with MPEG1/2 files.
