HD Sony Camcorder viewing direct to HDTV vs iDVD Product

Using iLife 08 or iLife 06. When I view the camcorder output directly to a HDTV, the video is absolutely great. What I end up with in my final DVD burning is marginal at best. The viewing in the iMovie window is perfect also. Is this because of the rendering to iDVD or burning a HD video in a low density DVD burner? Is there any hope that I can ever see a real HD result from a very good camcorder?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

No Mac's are yet shipping with high definition DVD burners.
Your HD Project is converted to standard definition when you burn a DVD.

And even if it did, the computer would have to be able to play a HD DVD as well as my other DVD players Have read that Apple is pushing Blue Ray, now that is confusing. The video looks great in iTunes so appreciate that would promote the use of iPods or web pages, but leaves out those whose ulitmate use is to burn a DVD.
