Nikon 4000 ED scanner problem

I have encountered a problem getting my Nikon 4000ED scanner to work with my new Mac Pro using OS X 10.4.10, namely that scanning program freezes when I eject a film strip. The rolling beachball appears and the only thing I can do is to Force Quit the program and restart it. I use Silverfast and have tried both v 6.5.1r2 (the current version) and v 6.4.r6 v with the same result. I also tried Nikon Scan and had the same result. I tried Vuescan, too, and curiously, it worked fine. My scanner is connected to my Mac with firewire. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the scanning software but that didn't fix the problem. Has anyone encountered this and found a solution? I know of course that I could just use Vuescan since it doesn't seem to share the problem with Silverfast, but I prefer Silverfast and would like to get it to work. Thanks.

Because the fault is occurring with two different applications, I thought it might be related to the OS, e.g. a setting of some sort that I should change. I'm new to the Mac and am still finding my way. That is why I posted this question here. I will follow up with Silverfast as well, of course. As for Nikon, I have not been using their program because I prefer Silverfast. I tried the Nikon program here just to find out if the freezing problem is unique to Silverfast or is more general, which appears to be the case.
