What kind of camcorder?
...and which software are you using to try to import your footage?
it's a handycam, HDR-HC5 . HDV too, not sure if that's relevant
i can't even get my computer to recognize the camcorder once it's connected by firewire. (i connect the camcorder to the computer, and nothing happens) but i thought i'd try to use imovie once i have it working.
I think iMovie is supposed to kick in once you connect it, but for the sake of argument, try opening iMovie first. You see, unlike a photo camera, you do not import your footage to your computer, and then bring it into iMovie-- you import it directly through iMovie.
just tried that...nothing is coming up. any other ideas? thanks
The camera is on and in VCR/VTR mode?

Just another couple of questions bibbi;
1. Which version of iMovie do you have?
Looking now at the specs of this camera, online; so...
2. And are you trying to import HDV footage or standard definition footage via fire-wire into iMovie?

i have iMovie 6.0.1 and I'm trying to import HDV footage (i think, since the camera is HDV, but maybe i am confused?) and yes, using firewire. thanks
yes, camera on and in that mode, and thanks for the link. this is so frustrating
When you start up iMovie, and the first dialog box appears that gives you the option to create a new movie, to name it and where. Underneath is the disclosing arrow named Video format. Click on this and choose HDV 1080i, then see if this imports it.
If not and because your not sure what format you recorded in try the other three or four options.
BTW, in the iMovie forum, some have been having problems with this camera and your not alone.
