I have been using a jabber account (gchat) in iChat for about 5 months now with no problems. However, today I tried to add a new buddy, but he refused to show up in my buddy list. I tried several methods (typing in his address in the "new person" box, adding his address card, dragging his address card, etc.), but he still won't show up in my buddy list at all. I haven't had this problem with any of my other buddies - regardless of how I have added them to my list. Any suggestions? (Let me know if you need any further info.)
iChat's Jabber side can be made to chat with GoogleTalk users on a text only basis.
IF you are the one using a GoogleTalk ID as your Jabber name and want to chat (Text only) to MSN Buddies then you have to have what is a called a Transport.
I am not aware that GoogleTalk does this on it's own so you will need to register on on a Jabber Server that is using one.

If this Buddy is on a PC and Using GoogleTalk himself then you will have to check you have spelt his name correctly and added him to the right Buddy List.
I talked to my friend, and it appears that we both have GoogleTalk IDs. I use iChat to talk whereas he uses Adium.
I've looked into the problem a little more, and it turns out he is the only one whose name does not show up. Furthermore, this only happens when he is online - if he is not logged on, he
does appear in my "offline" buddy list. I have definitely spelled his name correctly and have added him to the correct buddy list.
When he is Off Line then he shows up as an Off line Buddy but when he is On-line and Logged in he disappears ?
I am at a loss to explain that.
Are you using Groups in the Jabber side Buddy List ?
Try taking Off any Group settings and see if he is visible then.
He may be in a group you have deleted.
Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Groups are not turned on, and I can think of no other reason for this issue. I assume it has something to do with the client he uses on his computer - that's the only variable that's any different from my other buddies who do not have this problem.
Thanks for your help anyway, and if any other ideas happen to come to mind, let me know!
Has anyone come up with an answer. I've actually got the exact same problem. Using Google Talk ID through Jabber in iChat. Have one buddy with a Goolge Talk ID that just won't show up on my list when he's online. I do use groups and he does appear in the offline group when he is offline. I've tried a whole host of things like deleting him from my Gmail contacts directly on the Gmail website and readding him, making identical groups in Gmail's contact management to those I have setup in Jabber, getting rid of groups altogether on both sides. Nothing!
Just to add to what I said previously, seems to happen only to with people who are using Adium. Sounds like some sort of glitch possibly introduced in a recent version as I didn't have these problems before. Probably nothing to do to fix it but sit and wait.
It appears that I have been mentioned earlier in this thread. I am still having this issue, however, I don't believe my friend is using Adium. I believe (not 100% sure, but fairly close) that my friend is using the Google Talk Client, not a third-party one.
Having a similar problem - we are using the iChat service on OS X Server 10.4.8
One client is trying to add a buddy to her Jabber list (someone I have on my list and can chat with). He "shows" up, can get authorized and then disappears from her list. She can initiate a "New Chat with Person" by entering his ID, but he should show up on the list. Have tried deleting his entry from her address book completely, tried the same on his end. We are going to try deleting her preference files and essentially redoing her iChat setup.
