Logic Studio 8 Academic

No one really knows.

Don't do it! Don't do it! Don't cheat yourself. It's not worth it. I would just spend the extra cash and get the full version.

According to the Apple sales rep I spoke to via the 1-800 number, there is no upgrade path for the $450 academic version. That being the case, there would be no reason to purchase the academic version ($50 off isn't worth the lack of future upgradability). Of course the sales rep couldn't verify this, but it appears that Apple is poised to get rid of academic pricing. (I don't understand why they didn't just do it this time around and avoid the confusion).

that is not true, the price difference is not $50.00.

full version is $499

I know that because i sell it in an apple store in canada.
anyway, moreover, the academic version is eligible for updates but not upgrades, meaning that it will still update to version 8.x but 5 years down the road 😉 when we move to version 9 you gotta buy it again, but then at $169, that is the price that people would have to pay for upgrades anyway, at least.
it has always worked like this with apple, the price of educational package is almost same as the price to upgrade software.

and by the way, it is the same software, just different license attached to it.

i already ordered mine in canada 169.99 + Tax comes out to 190
may be it is a typo?? apple have never offered only $50 between academic and full versions.
Final cut studio is a good example, calculate the percentage and you will ahve a good idea.

for final cut:

full price is 1499 educatonal 879
at my university 649
so there you have it

David -- which university are you at? I'm at McGill but haven't checked their in-store academic pricing -- just what Apple has on the web.

It seems that there are no upgrades for Academic versions of Apple applications. Also you simply can't upgrade an Academic version with the Retail Upgrade package.
