MacBook Battery Latch Malfunction

This one is a little strange but its happened to me and I need help. The battery latch on my MacBook just doesnt work...the battery cant latch & lock when set to the lock position, resulting in the MacBook not being used on battery.

This hasnt happened due to any fault of mine and AppleCare claims that this isnt under warranty!!!

Can someone help or gimme DIY instructions?

Appreciate the help...

Apple MacBook (Core 2 Duo), Mac OS X (10.4.9), MacBook running Boot Camp 1.2

I'm wondering if there may be an obstruction of some sort. Did you recently remove the RAM door? Sometimes if the RAM door isn't properly seated, the battery won't get into position to latch.

The best method for battery installation is to start the battery at the connection side (outer edge of MacBook) and then lay the battery into position at the latch end. Once in place, turn the latch with a coin.

Thanks for the response, I hadnt opened the MacBook since purchase becoz I had built it with 2GB RAM.

The part in question is the latch which needs to be turned with the coin, even after turning to lock, the 2 latches dont come out and lock the battery...

I contacted Apple who said that this IS NOT covered under warranty? For no fault of mine...I'm being asked to pay for replacement of the entire underbody of the MacBook...this is ridiculous.

Did you add the RAM or someone outside of Apple? You need to check the foam behind the RAM door. If it is pinched and sticking out some, it may impede the battery from fitting into the proper position.

If that's the case, loosen the RAM door screws with a #0 phillips, tuck the foam in with a thin card (playing card works well), and then tighten the screws back up. When you're done, you shouldn't see any foam protruding from the top of the RAM door. Now try the battery and latch.

Here is a link with a clear picture of exactly what I mean. Under the heading *Replacing a MacBooks Harddrive* see #5 the *second picture and caption*. http://www.macinstruct.com/node/130
Hope this helps.
