HP scanjet 2300c

I was just given an HP scanjet 2300c. I installed the software, connected the scanner, and tried to scan... and so far the only message I get is that the scanner cannot be found. I looked for updated drivers on the HP homepage and they don't have any listed for Mac OSX. I tried installing the 2400 series drivers as well to see if they would give me better results, but the software just closes and gives me an error message.

Any clue as to what I should do?
