iPod Universal Dock - Power and TV Out

This might be a dumb question but does the Universal iPod Dock need to be plugged into a power source in order to watch video on my TV? I ask because instead of waiting 3-4 weeks for a new Composite cable I could just buy a dock and watch movies from my iPod on my TV but since I don't have a standalone charger I can't plug it into a power source.

Thanks,

20" iMac Core2Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'm also having problems. I bought an "other brand" (BestBuy) dock and my kids 60gb video ipod works fine for watching tv, my 160gb "classic" will not allow me to turn the tv on. I click it and it does nothing. It allows me to set NTSC/PAL Widescreen and closed caption but will not allow the tv out to be turned on. Do ya think I should go by the apple store and see what the deal is?

Powered or not I have not been able to get TV Out to work on my iPod Classic and the iPod AV + iPod Universal Dock combination. The only Knowledge Base article I can find about iPod Classic and TV Out does not address the power or no question.

From my own experience it really doesn't matter since I cannot even turn on TV Out on my iPod Classic. I have tried the iPod AV + iPod Universal Dock combination with no success.

Apple eliminated the video output from the connector that we use for headphones. If I place the iPod Classic on the Apple dock, the tv output will turn on in the settings for video and photo. The dock does not have to plugged into a power source for it to work. The dock has outputs for s-video and composite video with audio and it does work.

What doesn't work well is the video playback. After a video has played for several minutes, the playback just stops and a still image is frozen on the screen.
