UK Pre-orders before Oct 1 ...

... no chance. Just rang the Apple Store. The nice American man just came out with the same old spiel about shipping end of the month. Plus he claimed he didn't know any Apple Stores in the UK even had Touches in. (Well, if he was in the US, how would he?)

More than a bit peeved. Is there something special about the iTouches that are to be sold on this side of the Atlantic?

No, I presume it is exactly the same as the US model released last week. I believe the delay is with the quantity of orders they have to process, not the device reguarding issues, these can de dealt with when the device ships by Apple, so if it means them meeting the promised shipping dat of the 28th sep, they more than likely will ship defective devices.
