My phone does not ring

I've had my iphone for about 2 weeks now and it only rings sometimes. I have about 2 or 4 missed calls a day due to the fact that it doesnt even ring when the volume is on the highest possible setting. My text messages and voicemails are also delayed, sometimes by as much as 2 hours. I was on the phone for an hour with AT&T and they cant seem to figure out what the problem is.
Can anyone help me with this?

I think I know exactly what happen, because mine has the same problem.

After upgraded to 1.0.2. (didn't have this problem with 1.0.1 or 1.0.1 software)
The phone won't receive calls if you are using your data network. Sometimes, the data network is on for retrieving email or such.

My wife called the first time, no ring, no mailbox
called the second time, the mailbox came in very quick
called the third time, it may ring

I missed so many calls like this. I just hate it.

I went in to the Apple Store. They told me that if my phone is connecting to the Data Network, then the phone will act like this. He said is true.... this is really a bad design.

PHONE CALL is always the FIRST PRIORITY and MOST IMPORTANT.

Hope this help you to understand the missing call. Your phone should be fine, just the software (1.0.2) is bad.

Just curious Clemsonchan - what setting do you have for Settings -> Mail -> Auto-check? I usually have mine at Manual or "Every hour", and I don't believe I've ever encountered the missed phone call situation. Of course, call frequency and e-mail activity/message size play a role in this process if it actually does work this way.

I called apple tech support and they have no idea what the problem is. They reset the phone with me, called it several times and no ringing. My phone does have the software version 1.0.2 on it, and it rang last night, so not sure why today it decided it does not want to ring. It cant be the software. Also, my email is set to be manually checked. I'm not sure what the problem is, but its extrememly frustrating to have to be staring at my phone all day or else all my calls will just get missed because the phone isnt ringing.

I have this same problem. if I have the screen on and looking at it then it will ring. if i lock the screen and wait about a minute it will no longer ring when a call comes in.
i was testing this from work on a land-line phone and if i called my iphone and held the chord of the land-line next to the iphone while i called i could hear feedback in the headset of the land-line.
the phone would never ring but every time i would unlock the phone it would tell me i missed a call.
what's the deal?
the iphone was obviously receiving a call, however it was not making the phone ring.

If the phone is sending or receiving data there is a good chance your calls will go strait to VM. To increase the chance that your calls will come through stop your downloads (email, internet, whatever) before you lock your phone. If you are web surfing and step back to "home" to use some other app or lock your phone the data is still being downloaded. Try it! Start downloading a big page and push the home button. When you go back to Safari the page will be loaded. Same for screen lock.

BTW, even if you stop your web/email downloads you may still miss a call if it coincides with the email automatic download. Sorry Charlie.

I had the same problem with my IPhone not ringing and/or occasionally ringing. I thought I'd try restoring, but it didn't help. Convinced, I'd have to take it in for exchange, I decided to toy with it a little. I was looking at the black switch above the volume adjustment (this puts the phone in "silent mode") and decided to turn it off and back on again. I didn't believe it would help...but like I said...I was playing around with it. So I called the phone and RING!!!! RING!!!! RING!!!! I couldn't believe it!!!! So simple and I never thought to try it. So before any of you restore your phone or exchange it, try turning switching that black button on and off a few times 🙂

Good Luck!!!!!
