Is this the greatest gadget ever?

Quite a few people have complained about things with the iPod touch - not black enough, no notes, no disk mode, no this and, sadly, no that.

That does not disturb me at all.

There are always people who have complaints, and they are the ones who tend to post most on discussion forums.

However, I have so far not seen anyone write "this is a great product - I am so happy I bought one, and I will buy one for each of my kids, one for my mother in law and two for my wife!"

And I am a little surprised at that. Are none of the buyers impressed enough to write so here?

I honestly want to like my new Touch more than I do.

The screen issue is a very big one for me.

I'm on my 2nd unit, and both were/are essentially unwatchable for any kind of dark scene. This is the first true video iPod, and the video often looks terrible. I'm dissapointed, and it remains to be seen what resolution (if any) there will be for the issue.

Other oddities:

Safari locks up or crashes frequently. There's no support for flash. Eventually, this may be fixed with firmware... one can hope at least. But for now, browsing is limited.

It doesn't remember the password for my home network after I turn WiFi off and back on. Every time I do so, I must choose the network to connect to and enter the long string of digits. Again.

YouTube locks up frequently. And the search function returns different results than when browsing thru a computer. So much so that I couldn't even find a popular video that was in the first 5 listed online despite repeated searching.

My conclusion, sadly, is that the Touch might one day be great, but right now it's just not there. Which, as a big Apple fan, saddens me.

I have the same exact feelings. I'm also on my 2nd unit, which has unacceptably poor video playback. I did also notice the other assorted crashes, though I think Apple will address that and stabilize the platform.

I was really elated for the first day that I owned the device. It's a letdown really because this one issue is a real deal-breaker. Otherwise, I might think this is one of the best gadgets ever.

But honestly, in terms of pure functionality and capabilities, the iPhone is already leagues ahead of the iPod touch.

Wait, you are in the wrong thread! I know some people are disappointed and want to say so. It is of course important that you say so too, so we get to hear about the problems. And it is interesting to read it.

But this particular little thread was meant to gather positive opinions of happy sleek-headed men, and such as sleep o' nights. And women.

Expecting only positive opinions here on a product with so many shortcomings is not going to go the way you might expect. 🙂 No matter how much you try to cheer lead, the TOUCH has serious issues. If you like yours, that's great, but how about not trying to dissuade posters from any comment they so choose? You are being controlling when u try to limit who can post to your thread. When you ask a question, you might want to better predict the nature of the responses, so that you won't be disappointed in the results. 🙂 Like someone else mentioned this is a techinical forum, so those with no issues, or who don't frequent forums will not be represented here. For all we know, 98% of Touch buyers might be 100% thrilled with it. Hard to know though, judging from the complaints here.

I've just returned from a visit to my local Apple Store. I went specifically to view the new ipod touch.

My first impression was it's size. The dimensions and the extreme thinness of the device, powered off, were pretty awesome. So light and easy to handle.

Once powered on, I was impressed by how easy it was to accustom myself to the flat screen. I currently own a white 60 gig clickwheel ipod with no color screen, so maybe I was easier "wowed" than most people. To me, it was very easy to navigate.

I was equally impressed by the beautiful interface, the speed between transitioning between applications and the clarity and "freshness" of the images. I'm aware of the problem regarding the screen that people are thoughtfully posting on these discussions and I could see a bit of what people are talking about, especially when I covered the ipod touch with my hand during darker video scenes. Sort of a greenish "oily" cast. In the regular apple store lighting however, it looked better.

I don't know if this is the "greatest gadget ever", but I can tell you how thouroughly I was pleased by the ipod touch overall. Wonderful looking and feeling and easy to use.

Since I haven't purchased it, YET, I can't give my opinion on how it functions once it's synced and in actual use, but from what I saw today, I think this new device is pretty amazing!

I will hold off on buying one until the screen issue is either addressed or rectified, but once it is, I'll be back down at the Apple Store with credit card in hand!

I have not received mine from Amazon yet, but am really looking forward to getting it. I too have heard all kinds of complaints, but I am not worried. What really has me excited is the wireless iTunes Plus (drm free) store. I know that sounds lame, but I have been waiting for a drm-free iTunes for a long time, and now it is finally here, and on my wireless portable device. I get most of my msic from independent lables trough eMusic, but it is nice to know there is now an easy drm-free source for some of my more mainstream music that I like. And since the Touch has the iTunes store built in, I don't even have to mess with my computer when downloading them. Kudos to Apple for that.

I am also very excited about the built in browser. More for RSS feeds for weather and such than anything. It will be nice to wake up in the morning and simply check my iPod for the weather report - instead of having the mess with my laptop.

And yes, Youtube on the toilet will be a great way to waste some time at work =)
