Memorex Flash Drive Problems

I am having a problem using my memorex flash drive. I plug it into my usb port and it come up on my desktop okay. But when I click it, it says there is Zero space available when I know there is space. Also, when I click on the flash drive in automator it says that it is locked. Please help, I am pretty new to mac.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.10), This is the best computer I have ever owned!

Which one do you have? One thing that I know of is to check the end of the flash drive, opposite the usb connector. See if there is a small switch. Some of Memorex Flash drives have a switch when set locks the drive making it read only.

I have a memorex 1gb flash drive. It doesn't have a switch. I unlocked it on a pc this past weekend, but it still says that it's locked on my mac. Also when I click "get info" it says there is zero space, when I just erased everything on it.

What is the format on the drive? To be used on a Mac and PC for read and write it must be FAT 32. You can check the format using *Disk Utility* under Utilities in your Applications folder. That may be the reason you can't write to it with your MacBook.

Try this. Open *Disk Utility* pick the flash drive. It should be in the drives window. At the bottom of the window it should give details of the drive such as *Mount Point:*, Format: and a few other things. Now choose Erase. This should give you *Volume Format:* and Name:. Click on the *Volume Format:* and choose *MS-DOS File System* and then pick the Erase button. This should erase and format the flash drive to FAT 32. If this doesn't work you may need to use a PC to reformat the Flash Drive to FAT 32.

Click on the drive, then press command-i (Get info). In the window, check to see if the drive is locked (write protected). I have no other idea.

Okay, I checked the info on my flash drive doing what you said. It didn't give me any info on the formatting (or maybe I looked in the wrong place).But it still says I can only read.
