Send button on "new" mail missing.

When that happened to me, I found I was working on an email that had been classified as a Draft. To convert a Draft to a "real" email, I had to choose "Send Again" from a Menu. It does not send it again, it just makes your Draft into a "live" email so you can work with it.

I hate the text on that Menu item, and the Human Interface Police really ought to arrest the guy who named it. I cringe when I use it because I have the nagging feeling it is going to do something awful.

If all of the icons on the menubar have disappeared, and not just Send, try starting a new message and clicking the lozenge shaped button in the upper right corner of the window.

If none of these other things work, and it's ONLY the send button that's missing, you could try selecting "customize toolbar..." from the view menu, then dragging the send button back onto the toolbar, where you want it.

I was having this same problem, and the lozenge solved it.

in my case the send button is disabled
i cannot send any email, even though i receive emails just fine

I had a similar experience. The send button is automatically disabled if the SMTP outbound server is not set in the account preferences. I know I had this set up at some point but somehow it was set to use no account. I selected the SMTP server I'd already set up in the outgoing mail dropdown and voila, I got my send button back.

It makes sense, because you can't send if you haven't specified an SMTP server, but it would be nice if Apple would provide a tooltip so that if you hover over the disabled send button it would say something like "Unable to send mail because an outbound mail server has not been specified. Please check the account preferences."

Thanks. My Send button is now back. It took me a while to understand what and exactly where the lozenge shaped button is, Finally found it under the upper right magnifying glass -- the oblong shaped untitled button. Duh! BTW, love the upper right magnifying glass to search my computer.

I had a difficult time getting my outgoing SMTP server for BellSouth (AT&T) set up for Mail 3.1. Has to be exactly right and ATT only has on line instructions up to 2.1. Changing outgoing server took two saves -- first time entered new server, stayed at "none" and had to go back in to select.

Off and running with my new and first mac. Yay! Though very disappointed to have to run Quicken 2008 for PC on Boot Camp given the problems with Q 2007 for mac. Pages and pages of instructions to port and still lots of warnings about possible problems with Mac version. Also off to google how to surf and download while in Boot Camp so I can download to Quicken.
