How to use the Ctrl-C key

I am new to Mac and have a question about the Ctrl-C key combination used so often in Windows and Linux.

I login to work through a Citrix Access Gateway and start a published desktop. From that Windows desktop I use Putty or SecureCRT to access my Linux servers. Everything works fine until I run a command which requires the Ctrl-C combination to stop the process... like +tail -f+ for example.

I have tried every combination I can think of including command-c, option-c and fn-c but none of these seems to do the job...

Has anyone run into this situation and is there a way around it?

MacBook Pro (Intel), Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I should have added that although less common than Cmnd-. for stopping a process, esc is always worth a try.

Not relevant to the current question, but you should be aware of what is in

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts
(Note that these are configurable)

and in

System Preferences > Universal Access.

Don't stay up too late tonight! 😀
