my ipod doesn't show when i plug it into itunes

I just bought the new ipod nano and it was working fine when I got it. I tried plugging it in to charge it but it didn't show in my itunes or in my computer. I've done everything the website has told me to from reinstalling itunes to resetting my ipod. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions???

yes mine does the same. first time i plugged it in i worked fine. Next time i did it i created a new playlist to put songs onto the ipod. it removed all the songs from the ipod as it was set to sync. Since then the pc doesnt seem to know the ipod is there in any of the USB ports. (all of which are USB 2.0). Now i'm stuck wit an ipod with no music on it.

I noticed the same thing this weekend. I received an iPod nano for my birthday (August 25th), I've added songs, removed songs, etc for almost a month. However this weekend (right after updating to iTunes 7.4.2.4, my computer can no longer see my iPod, and iTunes doesn't see it either. When I perform a diagnostic, I get the "No IEEE 1394 Host Controller found". All my USB ports are working, and my computer's recognizing all my other USB devices.

Electrical power is obviously getting to my iPod through the USB port because it not only shows that it's charging, but the iPod's screen lights up whenever it's connected or disconnected. The computer just doesn't acknowledge it's presence (nor does iTunes). Another odd thing is that iPod will continue to play music as it's connected. Before (when things were working) it would stop playing music and display the "Do Not Disconnect" screen.

I saw a thread somewhere that suggested editing registries, but I'm going to hold off on that. I'm not as skilled in that area and I don't want to break anything.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the recent iTunes update? Everything was working fine until I upgraded to iTunes 7.4.2.4.

Here are the details of my iPod diagnostic:

I have the same problem. My laptop crashed last week so I had to reinstall windows xp. After I got it running I downloaded the newest version of iTunes. Now I cannot get it to transfer music to the nano which is only 3 months old and worked fine with a prior version of iTunes. I thought it was a driver issue but I got most, but not all, of the songs from the nano to the computer. It says I am not authorized to play 15 songs even though I activated the computer with iTunes.

I'm having a similar problem with my new ipod nano (8GB)
I got it today, and charged it fine. Connected it to my computer (which did not have the latest i-tunes update installed.. 7.4.2 or whatever it is!) but the one before that update.
My computer failed to recognise the ipod, but after about 5 reboots it suddenly picked it up!
It started synching, and downloading songs whilst updating the i-pod with whatever they updated it with to fix whatever bugs it had and whats not.. and then when it was done i was asked to put it to an external power supply, which i did

I let it fully charge again, however now my computer once again fails to recognise it again. - I have looked in device manager etc it just doesnt pick anything up in any of the USB ports at all.

The strange thing is, that my old ipod is recognised the second i plug that into my computer, so whilst at first i though it was a problem with my usb ports im now not so sure!!
My new ipod doesnt seem to receive anything from my computer at the moment - light doesnt go on, battery doesnt charge.. However works and charges fine on i-pod dock and charger i have for it!
I cant understand why it would pick it up that one time (all be it not the first time i tried) and now it doesnt want to know it!

I have recently now upgraded my i-tunes to the latest version.. still no luck, and i have run for updates on all my usb stuff in the device manager.. no luck!

If anyone could give me any advice that would be great! Im tempted to test my ipod on another pc/laptop, but i know i'll lose the 50 songs that did make their way onto it and for the time being thats better than nothing!!

Thanks!

I know i'v recently posted, but thought id mention that somehow i managed to fix it!

How!? Well, persistance! It must have taken 50 reboots, and at least 20 of them i'd said that this'll be the last time i try it, and when i really meant it.. i mean really meant it worked! Computer picked it up the second i plugged it in and i-tunes started synching it again!
IOnterestingly, the ipod still doesnt charge from my computer, but thankfully it held enough charge (and that along with the speed of transfering onto it - so much quicker than my early gen 20GB one) to get all my music onto it.

I hope anyone else with the same problems can sort them out, i know how frustrating it is looking for hours for help and nothing seems to work, so maybe persistance is the answer for you aswell! (about 8 hours persisance in total!!!)

I would still very much like some help as to why its only picking up my ipod 1% of the time though, and why it picked up my old one every time, as i know now that when i disconnect it im gonna have problems reconnecting again!
well, hope this helps someone!!

My Nano 2nd gen. cannot sync with my pc. I ran all diagnostics via Apple. One notice stated: iPod connection failed. and the last note stated "The iPod updater logging file cannot be found."
I not only added the newest version of iTunes, I also removed spyware, and did several system diagnostics to make sure it wasn't the PC. I checked the ports, and cords and the area where the plug plugs into the Nano. How do we find the software that has the iPod updater logging file?

Hmmm... well it sounds like we all have a consistent problem. I hope someone who knows the answer will share it with us. blink-blink

Do any of you feel like I do? I feel like we're all standing on an island in the middle of the ocean, wondering, hoping and waiting that someone will stumble on this thread and respond with a solution for us. I wonder if any of the folks at Apple read this forum? hope-wish-dream 🙂

Oh well, if something magical happens between now and the weekend, I'll let you all know. 🙂

I just purchased an 8G Nano yesterday. Took it home and tried to set it up on my PC using XP and could not. Before doing the set-up I updated to current iTunes and checked for any XP updates. Plugged the rascal in and got the registration screen. Went through the registration fine, and then I disconnected it. Did some shopping on iTunes and went to load my purchases but my computer and/or iTunes would not recognize the Nano. Used Itunes help to try and troubleshoot with no resolution. Is it the Nano, or something I did?

Both of my sons have ipods and theirs are working fine. I don't remember having this much trouble using any of my other digital devices on my computer!

You seem to have the same problem as the rest of us.. i hope someone does reply with some answers to these, dispite managaing to get my music onto mine eventually i would now like to put some more on!
I also need to buy a new computer, as mine has many problems with it (and this could be part of the problem itself) but im hesitant to do so knowing that even with a new computer and all the hassle of filling up my i-tunes again my nano still might not be recognised.
Still, guess im in a better position than most of you with a working 3/4 full nano so ill shut up and be happy!
