Hello Everyone!

My name is Wallace (former PC enthusiast) and I am new to the Mac world. I am trying to import files so I can edited them into IMovie. I am excited about using my Mac to the fullest. Any suggestions?

Basically there are two approaches "importing" directly from a device (e.g., an HDD camcorder, DVD camcorder, Memory module, etc.) or import via file transfer. Both approaches require the device files be converted to the AIC (or other compatible) compression format. Frankly, the former appears to be somewhat "hit and miss" while the latter works every time but requires manual conversion and use of additional software. Of course, this choice is yours and will likely depend on the specific source device.

Since you mention IFO, VOB, and BUP files, I assume your source files are most likely contained on a DVD. In this case, my preference would be to simply copy the main title, non-zero VOBs to my hard drive and convert them manually using MPEG Streamclip (free). This approach requires you have the QT MPEG-2 component ($19.99) installed but allows you to create an intermediate file which can be in any iMovie '08 compatible compression format. I also prefer this approach since you can batch process the files -- usually 5 DVDs at a time with each containing 4-5 VOB sets (i.e., 20-22 files total) which usually amount to about 16 plus hours of content.
