The Serial number is not valid - error while installation

Make sure you type all of the dashes ➖ that are included in the serial number.

I don't think that you should have to type your serial number from Logic Express. I think it is asking for the new serial number that is a part of the Logic Studio package. It is on the cover of the white "installing your software?" guide.

i've been having the same problem when i try to type in my logic express serial number. for some it doesn't accept it. does the serial number have to be registered ?

It does not have to be registered. I did it with an unregistered LE number. It can't be a 'not for resale' LE serial, or an academic serial.

Type in your LP8 serial first, then if it needs it it will ask for your LE serial.

Yeah, it's weird. The "Installing Your Software" guide for the Express to Logic Studio upgrade says you will be prompted for the Express serial number after you enter the Studio SN. When I did my upgrade, I only had to enter the Studio SN. Was never prompted for the old Logic Express number.

If you have LE installed on your machine with a valid serial (ie retail, and not volume or academic), Studio installer reads that and won't ask for your LE number. If you dumped the LE serial file or don't have LE installed it will ask for that number.
