iPod Classic PERMANENTLY RESETTING what do i do?

I just got a brand new silver 80 GB iPod classic. Yesterday i was listening to it and scrolling through songs. I started a song and it froze. I tried navigating through the menu but it wouldn't let me. Then I reset the iPod and it showed the apple logo, as it should, but then it stayed there. It wouldn't go away and I couldn't get to the menu. Then I went to my computer after it had ran out of batteries and plugged it in again. It went back to the apple logo! Then I left it there for a couple hours so it could charge and I took it out. The apple logo was still there. THEN I let it sit over night. The next day i took the iPod and plugged it into my Macbook. Now it wouldn't even show up on the sidebar of itunes. I am completely confused. Someone please help me.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The same thing happened to me!

Two weeks ago, I purchased a brand-new 80gig iPod classic. I had some problems at first; it wouldn't sync, and wasn't recognized by my PC. I put it down to my inexperience with iPods, and I got it working perfectly for a couple of weeks.

Suddenly, it stopped working altogether. It tries to restart itself, is stuck on the apple logo for about 1 minute, makes whirring noises, shuts itself off, restarts...over and over again. When I put it into the PC it's not recognized, and just restart even quicker over and over, with a dimmed screen.
I've tried it on other PCs, with no luck. It's not damaged, has been used moderately with no unauthorised programs on it, there's really NO reason why it shouldn't work...

I took it back to the store, they were as baffled as me. Tried to recharge it in a special dock (all the restarting had drained the batteries overnight, with no way of recharging it); nothing! Even though I had the receipt and everything, I couldn't take it back and get a new one. Neither could they repair it.
I would very much like to keep my music, as the PC it was on has crashed, but even resetting it won't work when I can't get it to appear on a computer at all.

(I started my own topic about this problem, too)

This same exact thing happened to me. I bought mine online, from Apple, and on exactly 30 days it froze. So I resetted it and the Apple logo came up as usual. Then it made a loud clicking noise and blacked out then the Apple logo appeared again and this continuously repeats.

I've tried everything suggested in this topic, and nothing works. So I phoned up Apple, and the guy said they'd send me a new one. I thought "Great".

I got my replacement iPod on 27/11/2007 and last night it started the exact same problem. So I need to phone Apple again today.

This isn't the first time I've heard of this problem either, looks like it's happening quite a bit.

I just had the same problem with my 2 month old iPod Classic 160GB. After loading the 1.0.3 Update onto it, iTunes gave me the "Your iPod is restarting" message, and closed the window after 14 seconds. My iPod screen went black for a moment, then displayed the Apple logo. It hung on the logo for around 30 seconds, whilst making wirring noises, then produced a loud 'click' sound, and repeated the whole thing again.

After plugging it back into my Mac, nothing happened. I tried to reset it by pressing the 'Menu' and Center buttons at the same time, but this had no success.

What I have done now is start it in Disk Mode, by holding the 'Play/Pause' button and the center button during one of its start-click-reset cycles. It then successfully connected to my Mac, and I was able to restore it using iTunes. It is currently syncing my music library.

I will report back with any news.

Well I phoned Apple today, twice. Got a new one coming. But when I asked for a refund I was told I couldn't have one as I am outwith the 14 day policy. After about two minutes searching, on apple.com no less, I found this.

Read the second paragraph. Now my iPod is still well within the first 90 days, never mind the 1 year warranty.

A little update on my situation. After starting the iPod in disk mode and restoring it via iTunes, I was able to successfully sync my music library, and it has been working fine since.

I am pretty sure something got mixed up after installing the 1.0.3 update. I'm also pretty sure it was the 'Click of Death' everyone keeps refering to... it whirred for about thirty seconds, like it was accessing the drive, then made an increadibly loud click noise that made the whole unit vibrate, and restared. I have no idea what can make that noise on an iPod, it almost sounded like something was slamming into the hard drive.

Hi there, I've got the same problem as you guys with my 160gb classic randomly dropping into this endless restart loop. I have found today that if I reset the ipod whilst it is connected to my PC I can break the loop and sync it as normal. Only problem is pretty much as soon as I disconnect the ipod and try to use it again it will go straight back into the reset loop. I have the most recent firmware and itunes version and this is a replacement classic as the one I got for xmas did the exact same thing. This is all very frustrating. Has anyone got any idea why these ipods keep resetting themselves in the first place? I never had a moments trouble with my old 5g using the same music library so surely it must be a firmware problem.

Ok, I ran into this same issue of a brand new iPod Classic resetting itself continuously about once every 30 seconds. I had to do the following to get it to work ok.

10 Simple Steps To Fix Your iPod That Is Stuck In A Continuous Reset Loop:

1) While the iPod was resetting itself over and over (continuously resetting itself), press the Play/Pause button and the center select button simultaneously, for about 5 seconds, and it will display that it is now in disk mode.
2) Start up iTunes on your computer and then connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable.
3) Click on the iPod in the left pane, select "Restore" to restore it to its original blank state. Follow the prompts to continue.
4) When the computer completes the Restore update, and it displays a message saying that the iPod will disappear and reappear in iTunes in a minute, immediately disconnect the iPod (unplug it from your USB cable).
5) On the iPod, you should see the main menu, in a few seconds. Pick a couple of settings to update for example the English language, and Eastern Time Zone (New York or Washington, DC), etc.
6) Press and hold the Play/Pause button to power the iPod off.
7) Re-connect the iPod to your comptuer with the USB cable.
8) Start syncing using iTunes, as normal.
9) All should be well.
10) Remember to always click on Eject in iTunes, and waiting for visual confirmation, before disconnecting the iPod.
The End. Whew!
