call blocking?

Is there a way to block some numbers? I get calls from foreigners who don't understand that they can't reach the party they want at my number and I'd like to block them. Is this possible?

I contacted AT&T and they don't offer call blocking. You would think it would be easy enough to have a list of numbers that you don't want to get calls from and have them blocked. I don't want to have a list that I will accept calls from because then I have to program someone in every time I hand them my business card. I just want to block repeat wrong number dialers and telemarketers.

I signed up for the do not call registery. I'll see if that helps, at leat with the telemarketers.

I've started getting calls from Nigeria (international code +234). Fortunately they're all missed calls - and now I'm aware where they're coming from I'll know to refuse the call if it rings and displays that code. From my ebay experiences Nigeria = Scam. Perhaps they have some sort of premium rate number and want me to call back?

Definitely the ability to block certain numbers from calling is essential. What if someone kept calling in the middle of the night? This isn't just a trivial feature request.

Hi, Everyone. I'm having the same problem. Some person keeps calling my number and when I answer I just hear static and mumbling. So I don't know if someone is accidentally calling me by pressing a button on the phone--like maybe if it's in their pocket or purse or something. But either way I don't know the person. If I don't answer, it goes to voicemail for several minutes before it hangs up--and again it's just static and mumbling. I tried calling the number back and it goes to some person's voicemail. I left a message asking whoever it was to please correct this problem but they called again not too long after. It was a new number for me so I'm sure they are friends of whoever had the phone before.

Anyway, I contacted ATT and here's what they told me (I'm just copy-pasting it):

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T
regarding your request
that we block a specific number from calling your
phone. I am happy to
help you with your inquiry.

Unfortunately, we are unable to block certain
numbers from calling you.
We can bar all incoming calls, but not individual
calls. If your phone
is capable of assigning ringtones to identified
incoming numbers, you
may be able to store the problem number and
assign it the ringtone of
Silent. This would not stop the person from
calling but would keep the
call from ringing your phone.

However, the iphone doesn't have an option of assigning "silent" to a number, so I'm stuck. It *****. I want this fool blocked!

My old motorola phone can block certain numbers I don't know why the iphone can't. Hope we can in the future!

Hi. Well, I don't have a mac or garage band. still i thought about just converting an mp3 to AAC and converting the extension to make it a ringtone and assign it to that number. that would keep my phone from ringing but if i don't answer this call, then it goes to voicemail for like 30 or 40 seconds or longer, and i end up getting 2 or 3 voicemails with just static. so my point is that even if i assigned a silent ringtone, i'd still get a voicemail notification and it would still be disturbing/annoying.

That's why i really hope att or iphone can help with this problem in the future. AT&T has an annoyance call center for landline phones but not for cell phones. 😟 i guess they just figure you'll change your number but that's such an inconvenience--i'd have to let a lot of contacts around the world know, as well as update numbers on lots of documents, etc.

😟

Thanks for posting the silent ring tone. For the last couple of days, I've been receiving calls from a number in the Ukraine. My iPhone rings just once, then I get a missed call message. Never any voicemail but it's bugging me because it rings at all hours and I keep forgetting to silence my phone at night. I've gotten a dozen calls so far. I've tried calling the number, but it rings once and then gives me a busy signal or disconnects. I've also tried texting- so far, no response.
AT&T is unveiling a program called "SmartLimits," which (for $4.99 a month) will allow you to block numbers. It's actually a suite of parental control applications, which I don't need. It's not available yet anyway.
The other option AT&T offered was to *simply cancel my international calling options*. I chose not to, because I do receive international calls from friends and family, but this might be an option if you never need to make or receive international calls.
