I feel like I'm losing my mind. How does one set the preferences in Mail so you don't need to double-click on a mail item to read it? Isn't there a way to just scroll down through mail using the down arrow and read each message in a quick view frame of some sort?
This is Mail's default setting, you must've changed it accidently. Usually there's a separator in Mail's window. If you double click or drag it to the bottom, the preview area disappears and you need to double-click emails to read them. So just do the opposite: Drag the separator (which is likely on the bottom of your Mail window) upwards, that's it!
Hello! I think you may have the window positioned incorrectly. Look at the very bottom of the screen and see if there's a thin line about 1/8 inch high with a dot in the middle of it. Click on this bar and drag it upward to show the message portion of the window. Tom
While the Mac is generally more secure than Windows, the preview pane viewing is not recommended for other reasons than just security. It may take extra time to view a message with an inlined attachment. At least if you do use the preview pane, turn off loading images in message in the mail preferences to avoid that problem. Spam can also show off nasty pictures that way, and you can tell if a message has an attachment before opening it by adding the attachment column with the control-mouse click on the column heading. It will show a paperclip in that column if an attachment is present.
