iPod Classic 160GB :: Battery Drained While Not Used?!?!

Okay, please someone tell me that this is a firmware bug & not a hardware issue, even though I have AppleCare & if it is a hardware issue, I can get my iPod exchanged for a new one:

I went to sleep last night & my new iPod Classic (v1.0.1) 160GB had a full battery. I didn't use it, it was turned off in it's case with the HOLD lock activated.

This morning, I synced it once or twice with my iTunes & after disconnecting the cable, noticed that the battery read approx. 75% full.
I ignored it thinking it was a glitch or a mis-read.

Now, 3 hours later, I took it out of it's case, it was turned off as I left it with the HOLD lock activated, & when I attempt to turn it on, the screen displays a big Yellow Exclamation Mark saying: *Please connect to a Power Source* as in the battery is dead.

Does anyone have any advice or insight into this? Is this a bug or defect? Is this a known issue that others are or have experienced? What did I do wrong?

Please help. I'm concerned.

ok, i had a good breath and decide to call them again, this time was ok, they knew nothing about the problem, but suggested me to do what i'm already doing restoring the software and syncing my songs, tomorow morning i'll know if works or not.

please do the same try to contact apple send them emails about the problem so they can do a bug fix for this, and i recommend restoring the software for now while we wait for the update 1.0.3

I have also noticed that battery on my 160GB iPod will drain from a full charge just sitting there within 24-48hrs. So far I'm really disappointed by the classic and regret already selling my 80gb 5.5

As I have posted a few times in this forum (and gotten no reply), I'm also experiencing a battery issue. Perhaps my issue is related to your issue.

What i've been noticing is the battery indicator doesn't seem to be accurate. The one shown while you are actively using the ipod is at the top right corner and until yesterday I was beginning to think the indicator would never move from the "full" reading. However it jumped from full to half in the blink of an eye, so there goes that theory.

Anyway, there is another indicator that seems to be a little more sensitive than the one I desribed above. When you let your backlight dim and a "screensaver" of some sort finally appears with plain digital output you should see another battery indicator and a clock. That indicator should read correctly way sooner than the other.

Let me know if this helps you at all or if these issues are completely unrelated.

Same thing here. It's happened three times since I've had the classic (two weeks). Right now, it's connected to the USB cable, and if I put my ear next to it, I can hear the hard disk spinning, even though I haven't touched it in several minutes. So clearly it's not going to sleep correctly.

Of course, right now I can't sync it either, since it just ejects every time I connect it, so, in my case, it's back to Apple for this one.

Hi All,

I would think that the classic due to the new front end screen shuffling of cover logo's could be keeping your iPod awake...

I also own a 160 classic but have not experienced this....

However it is critical to note that I use the turn off feature of the ipod... which can be done by holidng the play pause button... At which point the iPod shoudl shut down and the screen should not even show t the clock or status ....

Try giving that a try... It could alleviate the issue until apple gets a chance to update the firmware correctly to do this automatically...

Well the solution to my iPod problem was going to my local Apple Store and getting it replaced ... when the "genius" behind the counter asked me what I wanted him to do I told give me a new one ... and they did. So I hope this solves the problem .... now I just have another classic that runs like molasses compared to my 80 GB 5.5

I just wish I could turn off the shuffling of album covers and get a full screen menu again I don't consider this an advance or improvement.

I don't mean this offensively, but I'm not an idiot 🙂

I wouldn't be sitting here complaining about battery issues if my battery were running the whole time with screen display.

I always put my iPod to sleep (hold Play/Pause Button) & activate the HOLD lock to prevent accidental wake up.

However, if your post was for the general community, I totally understand & thank you for sharing that.

after upgraded to 1.0.2 i found an important battery issue

Battery life very poor. b4 i upgraded to 1.0.2 it was in 100% (with 1.01) but as soon as i upgraded it came down to 20%.. i thought i ll give a go at charging it after a few hours of listening to music.... so i put for charge and went to school.
very very disappointed... i dint even listen to 5 mins of music i come n see my ipod in the everning itz down back to 50%. even when i was charging my ipod was turned off with HOLD...

try to turn it off without locking the HOLD - I had the same issue with earlier ipod versions (years ago) and since then I never use the HOLD button when the iPod is off.

Yesterday after updating my ipod classic 80gb to v.1.0.2 i turned it off after fully charge the battery went to sleep now today morning before i go to work it wouldn't swith on, there was a message saying to connect to the power, this was the first time i had a problem with the ipod, perhaps the itunes its really poor to update album art, i wasted days already updating my songs and it also crashed once and i lost the .xml file related to the music library, but it automaticaly rescan for my files, it also doesn't startup fine it shows a small black screen and then open up the library, a lot of issues with it, once it couldnt recognize the ipod and i hat to restart the ipod that by the way didn't even came with a instructions manual, less than 20 days since i got it from apple store, i hope they fix all this bugs or i'll be disapointed for not to chosing to buy a sony wallkman instead.

I have the same problem! I have an ipod classic 80gb v1.02(the latest), i have it for like 6 days only. I usually use an apple usb charger and charge the ipod for 4 hrs for full charging. But for like 3 times the battery just drained itself. I actually had the same situation as yours. I went to sleep after charging the ipod for 4 hours. When i woke up I cant use the ipod since it says i need to charge it again, thats insane!!

Were you able to solve this problem?
pls tell me if you did, Im really disappointed right now that i replaced my ipod video with this ipod classic!

i have the 80 GB and i noticed that my ipod would turn on, by setting the hold switch to hold...
i was at school and wanted to tun off my ipod, but as i set it to hold, the ipod screen would turn on again loading the lock in the top of the screen to shine its bright light in my eyes again. this happened 3 times, before it went off entirely. i also noticed that one day my battery was abnormally drained, however, i never had the battery empty-warning as i load the batt. every day

I have the same battery problem as the last few posters here. I have an 80gb Classic, running with the 1.0.2 update. Recharged the iPod last night. Tried to turn it on today only to find a message telling me to plug it into a power source. Not sure if an exchange would fix this, or if this was caused by the update. I didn't have any issue like this before today.
