I support a mixture of Power Mac G5s and Mac Pros. I've spent years supporting Sun servers and workstations but am pretty new to Mac. Recently we began having problems with AppleTalk and decided to move to IP printing. From all I've read I think I should ignore LPD and use either IPP or the Jet Direct Socket. I'm unclear on the pros and cons of either of these and have been having little luck finding good reading material to gain a better understanding. One thing I've noticed is that it seems the printers don't send error messages such as paper out etc. using either IPP or Jet Direct as they used to do with AppleTalk. Is this normal? I have a mixture of HP 8150N and HP5500 printers. Thanks in advance.....Lawrence
I don't have any HP printers that support IPP (too old).
I "think" error messages work in HP Jetdirect. Try that again.
IPP = newest protocol, came out around 1999. Uses port 631.
HP JetDirect = port 9100/socket printing.
From my experience the Port 9100 is available in most of the networked printers, by default some of them bring the LPR-LPD port 515 disabled by default. as greg said I don't have HP printers on my office, just Xerox, and depending on the model you have one or another enabled. That is sometimes a bit of nightmare for users.
I switched over 1 of my computer labs to JetDirect and it seems to have solved the problem.
Will switch the rest on the weekend. Thanks for your assistance.
