using phone as pager

I am a medical doctor who recieves pages day and night. I no longer use a pager. Instead I have the call service text message my pages through my phone. My previous phone allowed me to choose the ringtone for the text message alert which has to be loud enough to wake me from sleep with emergency calls. The iphone does not appear to allow me to change the feeble beep that alerts to text messages making it useless for my application. Most of my colleages have gone to using the phone as a pager and this seems to have been a big oversight on Apple's part. Any known remedies before I return the phone to the store?

Several other physicians, myself included, have posted about the problems with text message alerts. The alert is very "soft" and I can have my phone in my purse or pocket and not even know that I have received a text/page. If there is ambient noise, etc, it is a problem. I have gone back to using my beeper more. I have submitted suggestions several time on the apple link. I know that S. Jobs said this thing is for personal use not business, but I think that receiving texts ought to be something that we can hear, hear consistantly, and not worry about missing. I have also missed an important personal text from one of my teenagers.

I LOVE my iphone but have issues with the volume of texts, the volume of the ring (have missed calls from my answering service as well as texts) and still have problems with volume from the speaker and the ear volume. It continues to make no sense to me, as I can crank up the ipod volume until it is way too loud.

The ability to hear alerts adequately or based on different preferences is not an enterprise issue alone and I don't believe anyone has said the iPhone is not for enterprise in any way but it is obvious that the iPhone was not specifically designed for enterprise as is a Blackberry or Palm.

All we can do is provide Apple feedback but we have no way of knowing Apple's priority list order with known bug fixes likely above user requested features/options provided via the Feedback link but the more feedback Apple receives regarding a specific feature request, the more likely it will be included with a future update or if already on the priority list, moved up closer to the top.

I believe the speaker phone volume during a call compared to the speaker volume with playing music or video has to do with feedback issues with the speaker and microphone being so close to the other but I'm only guessing.

I have the earpiece volume set at the maximum which is adequate for me only but should not be normal. Maximum should be maximum - really loud so I'm expecting this will be addressed relatively soon.

that's exactly why the SMS alert was the most important issue for me.
1.1.1 fixed it a little with louder sound and different choices.
Before I modded it and put a ringtone for the alert which was great. of course now the modd does not work anymore.
Anyone aware here when you buy a ringtone for Apple if you can choose that one with 1.1.1 for SMS alerts?
