1.1.1 affects black on W37 units - Is it cheating?
So I have just installed 1.1.1 on my W37 unit as I haven't had time to take it back yet. It has removed the black negative effect completely. But I think it is cheating. Because on some of the test screens, I think blue in particular starts clipping at the other end. I think what Apple have done is shift the gamma to eliminate the problem.
I also wonder whether the change affects W38 units as well....
Made no difference to mine. Looks exactly as crappy as it did before, fails in the video tests in exactly the same places. Frankly I don't believe they've made any change.
I can assure you there is a change on my unit. I could easily reproduce the problem using the well published URL and the test video. Now I can't produce the negative blacks no matter whether I look at it head on or not. Are you sure your unit has properly taken the update? This is not a "convince" myself moment. THe difference is very obvious. BUt like I said, now I think things have been squashed at the bright end instead.
Yup, version 1.1.1 (3a110a). I will note that the update turned my brightness way down and turned on auto-brightness, which I switch back to how I had it before: auto-brightness off, and at about 75% brightness.
If memory serves me correctly, this is the fix which about 95% of us thought would come out to FIX the screen issue. Apple, however, decided to step in and take IMMEDIATE action and those of us who wanted to upgrade for a week #38 were allowed to do so. Of course, we the public don't know how Apple handled it internally, and we don;t need to know. The fast fix was to get working units in the hands of the buyers. He did just that! Now that the hysteria has basically ceased to exist, a FIRMWARE update comes forth, and fixes the screen issues for those who held on to their units expecting Apple to do just what it has done.
Again, I must give Apple the Kudos' for not only doing things right, but for bringing calm to the masses! Well done, well done! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gunny
Ok, I've looked closer now, and yes, it appears something has changed. I still have to tilt it back 10 degrees or so for it to look "correct" to me in dark scenes. Before it was 30 degrees or more. Mine was pretty darn bad, so I don't think it's fixed, but it's closer. Would be nice if Apple came out and said what they did so all of us aren't wondering if we're going crazy or not.
