I did the update but can't seem to get to the TV out to work with my Monster iTV link cable. Not sure if I'm missing something or if it is only going to work with Apple's iPod TV out cable.
A reasonable guess would be that any of the solutions that work with ipod Touch will also work with the iPhone. I've already ordered the composite AV cable for my 3G nano, and think it's likely it will also work with the iPhone.
The Monster iTV Video Cable has the 30 pin iPod connector on one end and then AV (Sound) and AV or S-Video (Video) connectors on the other end. I'm plugging it directly into iPhone. I've tried the different settings on the iPhone under Settings | iPod | TV Out but its not showing up on the TV (no signal). I'll try it via the dock later and see if I can get it to work that way. Since the cable really doesn't do anything but deliver the video you would think it would work fine. I've seen other accessories that charge etc. not work but this is just a cable and I would think the connector is the same.
You might try the trick that works with ipods using third party composite cables - switch the red and yellow cables when connecting to the TV (ie, plug red cable into the yellow video-in on the TV). No guarantees, but worth a try....
I have tried the Xtrememac Roadshow with no luck. What is strange with that is I was getting audio through my car radio Aux port before, now I get nothing.
Apple's original AV cables which do connect to line out port of the adapters will play audio but no video. I dropped my 5G video ipod into cradle and saw clear video and audio.
I dropped my iPhone into the cradle and got an onscreen message that the device was not compatible. I did hear audio via the cables but there was no video.
I attached the cable to the cradle included with the iPhone and did not get the error message but still got no video.
It appears that you must purchase the most recent edition of the AV cable. Mine is barely a year old so I am a bit jaded that the new $49 cable is necessary to get video out of the iPhone.
i was wondering if the line out (1/8") on the back of the iPhone dock is for audio only or does it have a video portion to it. i have the cable which does video from the video ipod out of that jack but it didnt seem to work with the iphone dock..
Is there a cheaper place to get this? $50 for a **** cable is insane! Also, is there any way to get a converter so that the component cable will also work with composite?
This is totally unethical behavior on the part of Apple.. and I am a long time customer going back to an Apple II! Obsoleting connector products arbitrarily so you can rebuy accessories again!! for what reason other than greed?
Won't fall for this again. Steve, I hope you are reading and will start to reverse this negative trend
I bought the regular red/white/yellow cable, an S-Video cable, AND the Universal Dock with IR all for my 5G iPod and it worked well. However, it appears that they do not work with the iPhone. It's a total waste of money to have bought those things and they don't work across iPods. I can understand that the 3rd-ring in the headphone jack is for a mic and therefore, not video, but the universal dock and cables should work. I'm not going to buy the new cable either. Guess I'll skip ever watching my iPod video on TV.
So, I read the apple page linked to above... I see that the "old" stuff is the iPod Universal Dock vs. the Apple Universal Dock... and the iPod cable is different than the Apple cable. Very straightforward... So, for iPhone and iPod touch, it's all new stuff. hmpf. Think it's because of DRM restrictions??
Here's the explanation about the 50 dollar price for the new AV Cable:
New iPod/iPhones use the 30-pin dock connector at the bottom of your iPod in order to "out" video signals to a TV. Before, they relied on the headphone jack.
Once you plug in the 30-pin AV cable into the iPod, how are you supposed to charge it? Are you just going to let the battery run out while watching a movie? The dock is already taken with another device!
Thus, the NEW Apple AV Cables comes with a USB Power Adapter, allowing you you to charge and video out your iPod at the same time.
Separately the Apple USB adapter is $29.
The AV Cable is $19.
Total = $48
And the price is rounded to the simpler $49.
It is annoying that Apple is FORCING people to buy the included power adapter, making the pice 30 dollars more than usual. However, if you just had the 19 dollar cable, you couldn't charge it, so by including the charger, Apple is trying to help you and screw you at the same time.
The real question is: Why did the "TV out" technology move from the headphone jack to the 30-pin dock connector in the first place?
