Audio out of sync

I have a big iDVD project which has burnt to disk successfully under earlier versions of iDVD, but in iDVD 08 the sound and vision are out of sync; by the end of the movie they are several seconds apart.

I've tried saving the Final Cut Pro movie as a stand-alone QuickTime DV file; I've checked that the sound in the movie is 16bit. The big problem in testing it is that it all appears okay when previewing in iDVD 08 - it's only after 7 hours of building a disk image that I can see if it has worked or not.

It's quite a long video (about 70 minutes) if that's any help, and I have to build the disk on High Quality. But that hasn't caused problems with earlier versions.

The project is moderately urgent, so if no one can suggest a solution, a workaround would be helpful - including the option of going back to older versions of iDVD.

Thanks

Martin

Do you have all the recent iApp updates and the latest version of Quicktime?

Can someone kindly please post detailed step-by-step instructions
on exporting small portions of a iMovie/iDVD project to Quicktime in the
manner that has been proposed above?

Right now there seems to be no "fix" to the iMovie '08 bug (I doubt even the
folks at Apple know about it) and what has been proposed in this thread sounds
interesting, but I have no idea how to do it.

I am sorry that all of you are having the audio sync problem.
I create all my movies in iMovie 6, and burn them all with iDVD 8. I have had no problems ever with syncronization. All my movies are just under 2 hours, with video clips and still photos, and added audio of sound clips or iTunes music. Everything has worked perfectly even with these longer complicated movies where I need exact matches of audio. I have made over 20 different movies using iDVD8; over 100 movies total.
I do sometimes get audio stuttering in iMovie, but I have learned how to go ahead and finish my edits. I then export as quicktime and use the quicktime version in a new iMovie and use the new iMovie to burn my disk image.
I don't know what I am doing differently from all of you..... 🙂 ..... I never send my iMovies to iDVD directly, always drag the movie to iDVD's menu from within iDVD.

Another option, although not with iMovie 8, with iMovie 6 you can export back to DV camcorder. Then, reimport the movie. It will be one long clip, but the audio will be incorporated so that it should maintain its sync with video.

To export iMovie 6 as QuickTime, select 'Share' in the top menu bar and then choose 'QuickTime.' You then get a menu choice of format and can select 'Full Quality,' and specify the location for the quicktime movie. You do need enough hard drive space for this.
You can specify in iMovie which clips you want shared, if you want separate quicktime movies.
I don't use iMovie 8, so I don't know if it works the same.

I have the same problem and I assume, this must be a iDVD'08 problem, because:
- in FCP the sound and pictures are in sync
- on the QT export sound and movie is still in sync
- in iDVD'08 using the RC simulator, everything is still in sync...!!!!
- on the *.img or DVD finally produced, sound is no longer in sync, due to that, it seems to me that multiplexing fails resp. goes unsync, when movie and sound are again merged after coding down to DVD format (MPEG2 I assume).

And this problem must be solved by Apple!!!!

Hi all

For testing if it's really a iDVD'08 problem or not, I made yesterday my first DVD Studio Pro 4 project, using exactly the same QuickTime output from FCP6 I used in iDVD.

Oh what a wonder: *No such sync problems with DVD Studio Pro as with iDVD'08*.

*Now it's proofed: IT IS A iDVD'08 (Version 7.0.1 (1091)) PROBLEM.*

Since iLive'08 and Leopard, Apple delivers unfortunately VERY POOR quality on the standard software delivered with each Macintosh. That's somehow not the way how to aquire new Mac customers. 😟

I am afraid, the Apple Management is currently only interessted in selling music (by the way, it's a good idea how to make much money and make Apple a huge player in international business, but no reason to lose quality focus on all other products, it should be the opposite!) and discussing about iFund. 😟

May be, I am wrong, but as I may remember, the false iDVD'08 behavior came with the latest updates (iDVD, EFI etc.) and didn't exist before! But I am not sure with this.

However:

Please use the following link and feedback to iDVD team as much as you can and also ask all your friends using iDVD to do so (select "Bug Report" as feedback type):

http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html

The more feedback they get, the quicker this iDVD'08 problem will be fixed.

I can't comment on iMovie7 since I don't use it at all. I prefer using iMovie6 => iDvd'08.

And like Bev mentioned above, I too have yet to experience out of sync issues using both these apps in combination. The same holds true for FCP => DVDSP.

@ poolmaster: The learning curve for FCP => DVDSP is much larger than that of all i-Apps combined. On average it takes about a week or two to learn the basics of FCP.
And about 2-4 weeks for DVDSP (depending on how much time one devotes daily to actually using the app/s and running all the tutorials as well as reviewing about 1000 pages of text).

Hope this helps answer a few of your questions.

I tried to burn my 1st disc last night. I'm using iDvd 06 and imported my movie from iMovie 06 using 'Share'.

Everything was fine until I tried the dvd. That's when I noticed the audio was out of sync. After checking in both iMovie and iDvd the audio is fine, it's just burning the disc that's caused the problem for me.

It's only a 30 minute video and the sound goes out of sync right from the start and just gets worse the longer the video goes on.

I'm trying it again as I type this, but this time I'm burning a disc image first.

Hi Poolmaster

About 1..2 days. But until then you also knew a lot about Compressor from Studio 2 and I really suggest to produce your DVD footage for DVDSP with compressor. Use the prepared templates from Compressor.

I have the same problem with the audio sync on idvd. How long did it take you to learn enough to put together a simple project on DVD Studio Pro 4?

I have a problem with audio sync when burning a long project either to disk image or DVD in iDVD 7.0.2. Like others in this post, the sync problem only happens in the burning process. Note that I produced a disk image of a project that contained four 25-minute videos and that one did not have sync problems.

The audio goes out of sync about 20 minutes into the feature. I know that this is a recent bug because I produced three hour-long features back in December '07 and they do not have sync problems.

I do not have an answer, but I did post my feedback to Apple. Believe it or not, they do eventually solve the problems in their software, but they are very quiet about announcing a general bug until the software update comes out. In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed and hope that they solve the problem soon.

I am trying the Quicktime workaround posted above that worked for one person to see if that might solve the issue for this project.

It seems that the camcorder I was using to convert my VHS signal to Firewire has two audio setting, 12-bit and 16-bit. It was set to 12-bit so I changed it to 16-bit. I don't know whether that had anything to do with the problem, but I recorded the footage again, assembled it, and made a DVD project out of it exactly like the first one. This time when I saved to disk image the project stayed in sync.
