Question

Audio out of sync

I have a big iDVD project which has burnt to disk successfully under earlier versions of iDVD, but in iDVD 08 the sound and vision are out of sync; by the end of the movie they are several seconds apart.

I've tried saving the Final Cut Pro movie as a stand-alone QuickTime DV file; I've checked that the sound in the movie is 16bit. The big problem in testing it is that it all appears okay when previewing in iDVD 08 - it's only after 7 hours of building a disk image that I can see if it has worked or not.

It's quite a long video (about 70 minutes) if that's any help, and I have to build the disk on High Quality. But that hasn't caused problems with earlier versions.

The project is moderately urgent, so if no one can suggest a solution, a workaround would be helpful - including the option of going back to older versions of iDVD.

Do you have all the recent iApp updates and the latest version of Quicktime?

Yes.

(At least, I have installed everything Software Update throws at me. How do I check the latest version of QuickTime?)

Exact same situation here. Long movie. The more you're near the end, the more it's out of sync.
In the imovie project package, I tried to convert the shared / iDVD movie into a self-containing movie and trick iDVD into using it... still out of sync.

I found that too! I've now re-installed the old version of iDVD on another partition of my disk, and that works as it should, though I miss the ability to align buttons and text which iDVD 08 provides.

Hi Martin,
I've had exactly the same problem. A 90min film burns, with the last 10-15 minutes drifting out of sync. The only way I've got around this problem is to add 20 mins of black to the end of the film (very unsatisfactory compromise) but I've tried everything else, and like you, the film burns perfectly in previous DVD versions. I'm sure there's an IDVD 08 problem here.My film is due for replication at the end of the month, and I've spent the last two weeks tearing my hair out....

Today I have given up on IDVD08...I imported 90mins of footage direct from dv, imported it into IDVD08 and it seemingly cannot create a dvd without losing sound sync towards the end of a movie file. Really frustrating...back to IDVD06 then....

It's weird that it works for you with iDVD 06, because I came to the conclusion that the culprit was... quicktime !
Here is the experiment :
1) Open the .mov file from the iMovie project package.
2) Extract the sound track, and export it to any uncompressed sound format (AIFF, 16bits, 48Mhz for instance).
3) Now open the resulting sound file with quicktime, select all, copy and add the track over the .mov file.
4) The sound will be out of sync, exactly the same way.
Another convincing experiment : I tried to use the mov file to create a DVD with Toast... and I got the exact same issue !
So to me it's pretty clear the culprit is Quicktime, which fails to READ/EXPORT the sound correctly from a DV stream !

I tried this: I burned the .mov file to DVD using Toast, and the DVD was perfect. Using iDVD 06 there are no problems. I still hold out that it's iDVD 08 which is borked.

Hi, Martin, I have the same problem with a iDVD '08 project.

I made a diaporama of my last trip, with two chapters. In the first, I slip - deposit 253 photos, w 4 .mov sequences H264, and in the second chapter, 121 photos, and one .mov sequence H264. I attribute 3 sec for each photo. All sequences are less than 3 minutes each, created with iMovie HD.

When I play it with preview in iDVD, all go fine for all the project. The problem come when making a disk image or burning a DVD. All go fine with sound sync (photos and video) to the photo #100. After this point, all sound of the movies are played 6 to 10 photos before his rank. By example, the sound of a movie at image number #95 is well sync, but the sound of a movie at image number #106 is played with the photo #100.

The same problem appear with second chapter, all is good before #100, and sound sync is lost for the only video after that point.

I read some time ago that iDVD can't deal well with more than 100 photos by chapter. Is it true? and why?

Anybody have the answer?

Same scenario for me. I have a iDVD project with 3 iMovie projects inside. It is hard to tell on the second two but on the first one, the audio drops out of sync about 15-20 minutes before the end. I've isolated it down to ANY movie, ANY project (if it is long enough) will do this no matter what the clip order, etc. After the initial issue occurred I used Apple videos for the subsequent tests (presumably to eliminate codec issues) and they all produced the same issues. Everything plays perfectly in iDVD preview, by the way.

If a bug is reported here, does Apple automatically look at it?

Any updated news on this? I just did a DVD for another video company subcontract - it's just under 2 hrs in length. It is out of sync by the end. I just checked the project in FCE3.5 and it's definitely in sync in the timeline.

He'd sent out discs (100 +) and now the complaints are rolling in. he should've sent a draft out for approval, but it was too tight delivery wise..

Now I look like an idiot to him. Never had this problem before iDVD 08 to the best of my knowledge.

The latest round of updates seems to have cured the problem. I can't say if it's system 10.5.2, or the latest iLife update or iDVD or even the latest QuickTime, but the problem does seem to have gone away.

False alarm. I've done some more projects, and the audio is still out of sync. Back to iDVD 06.

Guys, I am having the same problem. Thought it was the fact I was using a
DL DVD. After reading this thread, seems not so.

I put my project together in iMovie '06 and then import it to iDVD '08 with
a setting for DL DVD (8.5 GB) as the project has a huge amount of music.

3/4 of the way through the audio goes out of synch.

Does going to iDVD '06 solve this problem? Is there a download available
for the '06 version of iDVD now that I have '08 installed? Can I downgrade?

Also, does the trick of adding 20 minutes of black footage at the end fix the
problem?

Just need the cures here.
