Scratch disk

Scratch disk

I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm working with Photoshop Elements 3 and keep getting the message "scratch disk is full". What to do about a full scratch disk?? Thanks for any help!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The scratch disk is free space on your hard drive. You can see the setting under preferences. I have three different scratch disks because I have three different Hard drives hooked up. If one becomes to full it will change to the next scratch disk I have chosen.

If you have one hard drive I suggest you free up some space on it.

Hello, Hossler. Welcome to the discussions. Elements likes a lot of space to run well. If you can free up some hard drive space it will be happier. How large is your disk and how much free space do you have?

Barbara, I'm technically challenged I'm afraid. I found the following figures under "information about this computer": Disk 55.9GB, 465MB available. Memory 512 and I think 256 is available right now. How do I clear up more space? Would connecting another computer help (and how would I do this--another post, I imagine). I'm working on some projects with lots of images and get the "disk full" constantly. Thanks for help and suggestions! Mags

If that is correct and that is your main boot disk, I can't understand why OS X can run at all. If these figures are right, you desperately need to remove some of your files to an external drive or burn them to CD/DVD to free up some space. You aren't trying to run PE from an external drive, are you?

You can use WhatSize or Disk Inventory X to see what is all on you disk. Then you can clean up some space removing stuff or programs you don't use.

AppZapper and AppDelete are both good programs for removing programs.

Monolingual can get rid of al the extra language files you don't need. They total almost 2 gb by them selves.

You might also consider an external hard drive to store things you want to keep.

No external drive, Barbara. I'm getting rid of everything I can and just eliminated all the foreign languages (1.1GB). Will try to get more stuff on CD's. Thanks for the help...Mags

Thanks so much, Mort--I just used Monolingual, which worked for half an hour clearing out languages and this freed up 1.1GB. That should help--and I'll use the other links, too. I really appreciate the help. Mags

You need to do more than this. You really should keep at least ten percent of your drive free. It's time to add an external drive if you don't want to archive off a bunch of your files.

Thanks, Barbara. I know I need more space. I have an iMac (old transparent model) that I'd like to use an an external drive if this sounds like a good idea--and if I can figure out how to connect them. So far, so good today. Mags
