What i need to hook up an alesis qs6.1 to a g5 i mac?

What exactly needs to be done to hook up a synthesizer to an i mac osx?

What do you mean by "hook up"? Do you

• want to use the synth to play GB's sounds or
• do you want to record the synth's sounds into GB?

Two very different stories ...

Christoph needs to know if you plan to record the sounds coming from the synth or do you want to control the midi sounds in garageband and record those. These are two totally different things.

Sorry for the confussion, i want to play the synth and record on GB, i tried to hook it up via midi but GB did not recognize it.

You can record the sounds your synth makes as audio but you cannot edit the individual notes in the way you do MIDI.

Or you can use the synth's keyboard to drive GB but you will only be able to use GB's sounds that way, though with these you can edit the MIDI.

Does GB recognize a midi device in the Preferences? Did you create a software track to record?

lets try to make this clear. I do not know how to hook up a synth to an imac, i tried to do it via midi but did not work, GB midi status says 0 midi input detected. If you want to help please tell me what's the preocess from step one to hook up my alesis.

AFAIK this Alesis does not have a USB connection: it outputs MIDI on a DIN (5-pin) socket: so you will need a MIDI to USB adaptor such as the Edirol UM-1EX. With this connected, go to Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI setup and follow the instructions outlined in this page:

This done, GB should detect the Alesis automatically. Remember that, connected this way, you will not be recording the Alesis's own sounds, only the instruments built into GarageBand.
