What is button 4 on Mighty Mouse?

Hi,

what exactly is the button 4-setting in the Mighty Mouse settings in Tiger and how can it be configurated.

Thanks in advance - Christoph

That is exactly what it is. It is used only when the initial software is installed and is a designator only.

I have been playing with SteerMouse. It lets you set some of the buttons choices. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't see the left button.

Hi Malcolm,

thanks for taking the time to reply to my question - I already found also this mouse-tab... the problem is the menu which is available for the side-buttons... there is also the possible setting "Button 4" and I just wanted to know what that is for and where I can maybe specify what button 4 should do - other than the possibilities that are shown in the drop-down menue. Sorry for making it not clear...

Did you load the software for the mighty mouse. On mine I can use the drop down menu for each button and use it for anything I want. If you don't like the choices there is an other choice, or at least there is in my mouse setup. You can choose other and a window should pop up allowing you to choose what you want that button to do. I chose the side buttons to start a program I use a lot but don't want to just leave open all the time.

Are you asking what it means if you set a button's function to be "Button 3", or "Button 4"?
They don't do anything directly in OSX. OSX uses Left-click (Button 1) to select, and Right-click (Button 2) for contextual menu. X11 and other applications (such as Maya) may be written to work with a mouse with more than two buttons. When running such an application, the mouse settings determine which of the Mighty Mouse functions (pressing the scroll-ball, or squeezing the side buttons) will be interpreted by the application at the third or fourth button of a multi-button mouse.

yes - that was my initial question - what it means when I set these pressure point to button 3 or 4. I couldn´t imagine that it just do nothing, thought it might be cool if there would be a possibility to specify the behaviour of button 3 or 4 in addition to the possibilities of the visible opportunities...

Thanks for clearing that up - Christoph

after a lot of searching about this subjust I found a solution, at least until apple gets wise and reprograms the mighty mouse to allow for keystrokes.... use applescript ( the example below is to program "Back" in safari but you can change the application and keystrokes if you want...

create new script and copy this into it...

activate application "Safari"

tell application "System Events" to keystroke "[" using {command down}

Click Run or Compile at the top...
Save As... name it whatever, be sure to save as an application

Then set the button of the mouse to the application you just made

Hope that helps anyone else that has been googlin this
