Data Roaming OFF and Voicemail when traveling internationally

I'm glad that the new 1.1.1 update allows me to have EDGE off when traveling internationally.

My question is this. My understanding is that Visual Voicemail uses EDGE. So when I go to France in two weeks, if I have Data Roaming OFF, how will I be able to check my voicemail? Will I still get an alert indicating that I have a voicemail waiting if Data Roaming is off?

I've used other phones internationally. Generally I do not get a notification that I have voicemail messages; I have to check for them periodically. However, to save money on roaming charges I don't use the mobile to check; I call the voicemail number from my laptop using Skype or using a prepaid IP or wireline calling card.

Also, holding the "1" button usually doesn't work, because it doesn't have the international prefix preprogrammed. So even using a mobile phone it is necessary to actually enter the voicemail retrieval number (or save it as a contact).

Here's the answer to my own question.

Voicemail worked great overseas (in France). I got notified, and it worked just the same way it does when I am in the USA.

When you turn "data roaming off", the "E" at the top of the phone remains on. But if you go to Safari or email, it tells you that you have data roaming off, and you need to turn it on.

So I had no data charges while in France. Phone and voicemail worked great.

EXACTLY what I wanted. Thanks, Apple!
