I know this is not the first topic about it but I feel so desperate and I hope that with yet another feed back apple might work on this "bug".
I have an iMac 24inch with a 2,8ghz CPU and 4geg of very expensive apple ram.

I called the apple support (france) where we explain me how to flush the PRAM and told me that I should format if I get freezes again.
After an afternoom of basic usage my iMac froze. I re-installed Tiger and after just few minutes after booting on tiger (I did not installed any updates) it froze again...
I even had the feeling that it was close to froze during the installation.

This is a real nightmare, this computer cost me a lot of money and I don't have that much time to lose on how to fix it. If I had the time and liked to do so I would not be an apple fan and would not hate vista.

I made all my relatives switch to intel mac (mother, sister, grand ma) I had nothing to complain about any of those Computers (MB, MBP, iMac White). But when it came to me to go on intel it makes me love my slow G4 CPU.

Where is gone the Apple professionalism ?

I know my post my sound useless and dumb but I'm really disappointed by apple today, I dreamt of this iMac for quite a long time.

    What do you expect? A magic potion that will be downloaded to your computer that will make eveything work well again? That's not going to happend. It may be a number of things that cause your computer to crash and you need to isolate the problem..... The sooner you realize this... the sooner you can get on with fixing it.
    You may want to first change your RAM modules and see if that causes the freezing. Since you've done a fresh OSX install I doubt that any particular software is causing conflict. It may also be something with your HardDrive - however that you would have to get replaced by Apple.
    Its going to take some time before you find the source of freezing - but dont be fooled by all the post here - not everyone has the freezing because of one particular problem. I for one have not had a single freez..... and I doubt I'm just lucky,,,, more likely just the norm.

    Lucky you, you don't have to reboot you iMac every 30 minutes...

    Mac or PC. Linux or Windows. Booting up every 30 minutes, booting up every week or not booting up at all. You're still going have to through the "song and dance" of isolating the source of your problem.

    Shame on you guys. I don't even have my iMac yet - I'm still stuck with my blasted Dell, exiled in PC-land, awaiting my first Mac in 25 years to arrive - but I still can do more for this poor sufferer than you dolts.

    If that doesn't work, post again, and we'll help you sort out your problem. There have been other people with the same issues, and many of them seem to be resolved by undoing the version 1.1 update. Try it, and if it doesn't work, I'm sure others (who actually have their Mac to work with, unlike me) can help you.

    Sorry, I know you mean well but 3on has already stated in another thread ( that the problems he/she is experienced are largely unaffected by whether or not the 1.1 update is applied. In which case 3on’s case may be more severe than most and that it would most likely be solved by hardware replacement.

    Well Hardware replacement might not be necessary !
    I'm almost sure that this is a software issue, so I gave Leopard a try !
    And for now, NO freezes, few crashes but due to Leopard only and only minor crashes such as Transmission or Mail.

    If that's the case then Apple better include the fix in 10.4.11 (or whatever free update they come up with) as well. I kind of find it troubling, when people say that they hope the problem gets fixed when Leopard rolls out. Why should I pay to fix something that should have not have been broken in the first place? Better yet, give out free copies of Leopard to everybody who bought an alum iMac!!

    BTW you seem to be lucky enough to have a developer friend in the loop who is willing to lend you a build of Leopard. I hope you are having fun (or not, depending on how stable the bleeding edge OS is)

    I don't have any friend, except if we can consider the Norwegian as friends...
    Well for now it work ok and way better than Tiger.
    I hope it will last !

    Ah, sounds like you found a good solution for yourself then. Looks like I might get one after Leopard is released. Just curious, do you know how to check what version of driver you have for your video card? If you open system profiler in the utilities folder, there is a heading on the left called “extensions” that’s where all the drivers are listed I think. I’m not sure if you checked the driver version before you went to Leopard but I was wondering if you could tell if anything has changed since 1.1.

    Look for something that has “radeon” or/and “2000” and that should be the driver, it should show when it was last updated and the version number. For example mine says “ATIRadeon8500” it’s version 1.4.18 and was last updated in march 26 2005 about a month before Tiger was released, (I have a 9200 which is based off the 8500 GPU, hence the use of the 8500 driver).

    I posted today a message on iMac freezes. I found some interresting information. OpenGL depth set to 24bit using Cataqlyst Control Center will avoid most of all freezes on Windows XP.

    On this OS I also got a blue screen indicating that driver went to an infinite loop. Windows told me to update driver what I can't do due to Apple firmware lock.

    No, not "graphics/displays". If you go near the bottom under software or logiciel a couple of steps down there should be something called extensions, it's right below applications. When you select that, there should be a list of items on the main box. (there might be a brief wait while the system fetches all the information) There should be an item in the list with "radeon" and probably "2000" in it. Actually the exact name of the driver is listed here

    scroll down and there is a post that shows where the graphics drivers are being installed. Though this might be useless as it seems that you have not taken note of your previous driver so you probably couldn't tell if the driver specifically changed. I appreciate the effort though.

    This has been addressed by the masses, this is not your fault, its an Apple-created issue, and the only thing we can do is wait for a fix.

    Since this issue started, its been posted on AppleInsider, MacRumors, etc. Apple surely has to be working on a fix now, otherwise its going to get in some trouble very soon

    I would expect a fix to be out in roughly 10-15 hours, at the most. This has happened in the past and Apple has fixed issues like this, I wouldn't go crazy and destroy your iMac just yet.
