Mail update error upon launch attempt

Today I tried to solve a friend's Mail problem, but nothing I tried helped.

She has a G5 flat-screen iMac running OS 10.4.4 (I think), and two days ago when she tried to open Mail, this message came up:
"Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." This message comes up as Mail is launched, but nothing in Mail is accessible. When you click "OK" Mail closes down.

I ran Disk Warrior on her machine, repaired disk permissions, tried throwing away the file: com.apple.mail.plist, threw away all the files that were in her "deleted mail" box as well as those that were in the "sent" box (only one file in drafts and about 3 in the inbox, tried restarting and tried holding down the shift key while launching Mail. I checked the mail server log for errors, and here is what the log said: mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail:CGContextclip to Rect: invalid context -- means nothing to me, but maybe it's a clue for someone here.

She has dialup, and is now in the process of trying to download the 165 Mb 10.4.10 combo update file, but when I left her about 3 hours ago, software update said it would take another 10+ hours to complete. I'm hoping this update will solve her problem, but in case it doesn't, does anyone have suggestions how to correct this situation? I can't figure out why there is a problem with the "home folder" -- she hasn't used 1/10 of her hard drive space (I checked) -- especially since I've (through the finder) deleted just about all of her email.

Corruption of ~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index (which in turn might be caused by some filesystem corruption) is known to cause this bogus error message in Mail, even when there is enough space available on disk — but you must make sure first that there is actually enough space available (a few GB) and that the error message is indeed bogus.

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here (you may omit this if you’ve already run DiskWarrior):

The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?

After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:

1. Quit Mail if it’s running.

2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.

3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.

4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.

5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.

6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.

Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

David, thanks again! This afternoon, I was able to fix my friend's Mail problem using your suggestions. She is pleased, and so am I!

I think you get points for solving this problem, but I can't see how to do that at this point. I did click on the solved button, but I don't see how that did anything.
