iMovie problem with software upgrade

I spent 9 hours yesterday trying to work out a problem with a brand new MacBook Pro I got the day before. The iMovie application would unexpectedly quit when trying to import video from either of two different devices. Interestingly, it would be fine for the first event recording but would quit during the second event recording and then corrupt the first file, such that the thumbnails for the first event would be "grayed out" and the sound would be gone. After several hours on the phone with support people and reloading the OS twice, the conclusion was that the newest available software updates were to blame, since after reinstalling the OS but NOT updating the software, everything is fine. The support people had never seen this before. I am now left being afraid to ever do a software update, since I may lose everything before it. Anybody else have ever seen this problem?

Wow, i did not realize that the problem has been reported before. The tech support supervisor talked and acted like he'd never heard of this before. I guess they should monitor their own forums! I love the iMovie software when it works. I don't know of any PC products that are so intuitive and easy. Unfortunately, I, too have been very disappointed by this expereience, especially since I have been complaining for 12 years about every PC I ever owned and have been arguing with all my PC user friends about how wonderful Apple is. After reading the previous thread about this problem, I have to seriously think about returning my Mac for a refund and cut my losses.

I am also having problems. Brand new MacBook pro. Came with iLife 3.0. Ive just brought iLife 08 and it update iMovie, iPhoto but has mysteriously refused to upgrade iDVD which remains at 3.0 and doesn't work. After reading what you are all saying I am not sure how much I want to take this further before apple provide a fix to see that iLife 08 is compatible with iDVD. Why isn't there an easier way of getting support?

I'm having the same problem. I'm right in the middle of editing a project. I installed the iMovie upgrade (along with all the other stuff for iLife08 upgrade), and now I can't use iMovie. I've lost all sound on my projects and events. I can't play projects... they just won't play. Only clips in the events window will play (but with no sound).

I've been waiting for a week now for another update to fix the problem. So far nothing is coming from Apple.
