One important icon missing...

A very strange problem... My icon for the computer itself is missing. All the others are working fine, folders, documents etc on the desktop. But the most important one - gone.

And, and this scares me, I cant start from a DVD. If I press C during startup the mac just ignores it. Same thing while keeping the alt key pressed. So therefore I cant run any software to check my harddrive...

Anyone?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Go to the Finder Preferences and click on Sidebar. Is there a checkbox next to "Computer"? If not, check it and see if the computer's icon then appears.

What DVD are you trying to start up from? The installer disk that came with your MacBook Pro? If not, what disk are you trying to use?

A bit of a long shot, but you might try deleting the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist preference file (in your user -> Library -> Preferences folder), then log off and log back in (or restart the system).

Im trying to start with a OSX dvd (10.4).

A retail copy of Mac OS X will not boot your MacBook. You need to use the installer disk that came with your MacBook Pro.
