Compatibility Problems with Ricoh Caplio R2

I own a Ricoh Caplio R2 digital camera. My friends said, when I have a apple computer I won't need to install drivers anymore. Well, I plugged my Camera through a USB cable in the computer but nothing happened. Than, like I know it from windows, I searched for a driver on the Internet, but the driver I found (Caplio Mounter. Downloaded from the Ricoh Camera site) doesn't really satisfy me, because when the camera connects and Iphoto is opened, it takes a long time until the photos are displayed to have a preview before copying them on the harddrive. When I'm finally able to preview them it takes pretty much the same amount of time to copy them
onto the harddrive
So, my question: Is it a question of iphoto or is the driver bad...are there universal drivers?
I now found out that the camera is not supported by Iphoto. I know that Ricoh Cameras aren't really widespread, but I still thought that the camera would be supported.
I have also the problem, that Iphoto '08 crashes frequently when I check the photos. There seems to be a big problem with the camera and Iphoto. How can I get rid of the problems?

Thanks for the help !!

Did your friends consult this page, Mac OSX Digital Camera Support before responding? Ricoh cameras don't appear to be supported by OS X.

You can use a card reader, which, IMO, is the preferred way of uploading from a camera, even with an unsupported camera. What memory card type does it use?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Here are couple of things you can try:
1- The camera has two PC connection protocols, Ricoh and mass storage driver. The Ricoh protocol needs the Ricoh software/drivers to work. Ricoh probably does not make a driver for the Mac. So, you will need to switch the connection option to USB mass storage. Check the manual that came with your camera on how to do that. iPhoto should then recognize your camera.

If you already had the camera set-up as USB mass storage but iPhoto does not recognize it:

2- Check and see if the camera (actually it will look like a connected hard drive) shows up on the Desktop as a disk when you plug it in. If it does then you can double click on the disk find your photos and drag and drop your photos into iPhoto and they should import.
