Cant hear through my headphones

When you plugged in what headphones?

Unless you have headphones specially made for the iPhone they will not work without an adapter. This is because the plug is a special plug that includes not only the left and right audio outputs but a microphone input (so you can plug in a headset that allows you to talk on the phone as well as listen).

Belkin makes a $10 adapter that looks like a telephone pole -- you can plug in any 1/8" headphone set to that and then to your iPhone (I have that one). Just recently another one was released (can't remember who but it's in the store) that works with any headphones I do believe but is mostly designed for a bluetooth headset.

Sorry, but this is not completely true. Yes the microphone enabled headphones such as the ones supplied with the iPhone use a special plug, but any 3.5mm stereo plug will work as long as it's slim enough to fit the recessed socket. Many are not but some normal headphones work just fine. My 1st gen ER6i phones have a nice small plug that fits well.
I have a few other headphones that I have 'trimmed' with a craft knife to fit the recess and those work fine too.

Check to make sure your plug is actually fully making contact. Test the socket by trying the supplied earbuds.

+1 on the ugly Belkin adapter suggestion. That might be the easiest option for you.
