uncle. i've searched and tried everything i could think of. besides the crazy workarounds to find your printer presets, what i can't workaround is every time i go to print it fills my preview with a random crop to fill the page. i'm surprised i haven't seen any posts on this, so i'm hoping i'm a dumbguy

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you trying to print a specific sized print, i.e. 4x6 or 8x10? If so have you cropped the image to that size before trying to print. And, have you selected the correct paper size in the print menu?

If the image is not cropped to the same ratio as the print size selected it will be cropped so that the shortest side is full and the widest is cropped to fit. Is that what you're seeing?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

If you want to print the entire photo without iPhoto cropping to fit try this:
Select the photo and click on the Print icon,
Select the Paper Size and Print Size from the options or Standard for the default Print Size.
Click on Customize. You will see the photo (cropped) on the page, click on the photo to select and then hold the control key and click on the mouse.
From the the Contextual menu select "Fit Photo to Frame Size". You should see the entire photo on the screen. Click on the Print button.
