So after I updated to 1.1.1 I've noticed over the past few days some issues with the signal strength I'm getting. I live in an area where I only get 1 to 2 bars but I work in area where I get 3 to 5. After the update the phone sits at 1 bar even when I am at work. If I shut off the phone and turn it on then it goes back to the 3 to 5 bars. But once I go home it drops again and then gets stuck at 1 bar until I turn it off and on. I'm going to check it tomorrow and see if it does it and if so I will restore it. Anybody have any ideas what's going on with it? I just hope it's not a more serious issue.

I too am seeing a fairly significant decrease in coverage since the update. I wondered if maybe I was imagining it but I don't think I am. I hope they fix this soon. My coverage before was livable but this is not great at all now.

I've also found the same thing - though I think that it's not coverage, but the phone properly recognizing/displaying your bars. I say this because I was in a basement area with no coverage. I walked upstairs to an area that typically has 5 bars and it still said No Service. I stood there waiting for a minute or two for it to update and it didn't. But I tried placing a call anyway and it worked just fine. It said No Service the whole time I was on my call and finally fixed itself back to 5 bars about a minute after I ended the call. Trying to use anything over Edge, though, doesn't seem to work when it "thinks" it has no service. Hope they fix this, it's incredibly annoying to know that you should be able to use Edge (outside, in an open area where there is always 4-5 bar service) but can't. This also just started happening after the 1.1.1.

Its probably just a coincidence. You're coverage are is probably seeing some sort of outage of some sort.

If this was a true software issue, every user(or a vast majority) would be seeing this. I haven't seen any decrease in signal strength. I still get 5 bars everywhere.

I've noticed two things about the signal strength on my iPhone since the update - the first is that it is less apt to vary than it was before, and the second is that it is typically one bar lower (sometimes 2) than it was in the same locations before. I believe however that was I am seeing is an issue with the way the signal is being metered, not with the level of signal. I have not experienced any change in usability of the phone in terms of locations I could use it before that I cannot now.

Could not agree more with Andy O's assumption on the metering although I have not even noticed a decrease in the display of the signal bars.

There should be no direct correlation between the update (1.1.1) and the signal that AT&T is transmitting.

I would say the opposite of people here. I have even mentioned prior to today that I have had less of a signal problem and less garbled calls since the update. In fact my iPhone is usuable places in my house it never was before this update.

I too noticed a significant signal decrease since the last patch. Where I was typically getting 4 to 5 bars (even while I was abroad in Italy), I am now getting 1 to 2 bars. This is NOT just a meter display problem. I have missed at least 3 calls due to loss of signal while sitting at my desk, which NEVER happened to me prior to the patch.

I called iPhone tech support and spent about 45 minutes on the phone while they had me go through a whole series of toggles, resets and restores. Nothing worked. The iPhone tech then placed a 3-way call to AT&T to see if there were any problems with the cell towers in my area. The AT&T tech said everything was fine, and in fact, I should be getting a very strong signal at my location.

One thing that the iPhone tech found odd was when he had me place my phone in the charging dock my signal strength shot up to 5 bars, and when I took it off it dropped back down to 2 bars. We tried this several times. He told me to go to an Apple store to have a tech there look at it.

That strongly suggests there is something in the power-saving control of the device causing it - which may not be surprising since there are signs Apple may be juggling with the algorithm via these updates. However, I don't see similar behavior with mine - at least not consistently. There is an occasional jump from 4 bars to 5 after I dock my iPhone at work, though it's not immediate. I see the same thing however when I hold the iPhone along the top edge rather than the bottom.

I too am having this issue with my phone. Not only do I lose a signal but when I wake the phone from sleep mode if I do have bars they go away, and once I toggle on it says searching or no signal then after 2-3 seconds the bars come back. When my phone is charging this doesn't seem to happen. Any other suggestions? This is my second phone since July. The first one was replaced two days ago due to software issues. I am not happy..

I am dropping calls left and right after this update. Is it possible to roll back an update. Otherwise, there is a good chance I will cancel my contract with AT&T. They said the signal should be fine here.

This is a serious issue and needs a hotfix if possible.

I just swapped my iPhone with a new one (old version, no update yet). I was having what appeared to be signal issues at my house. I have seen many reports of signal strength decrease with the new update.

I had a Moto Razr before this and the signal was not always the greatest, but I never missed calls or texts. During the first week of my iPhone, I missed more calls/texts than I ever have. *"Missed" meaning the phone never rang on my end.* When I would go to wake it up, it would state I have 3 missed calls and/or voicemails, but they happened an hour or two ago.

On top of that, the automatic time function was wacko and would run *5-30 minutes* behind! When I would go to correct the time manually, then turn on automatic time, it would *go back* to 30 minutes behind.

The new iPhone (v1.0.2) I have has full bars, which is a far cry from the partial bars and sometimes full bars I had with my previous iPhone. I am not going to update it for a few days and see how it goes. Then I'll update it and check the signal. If I get the original problems, then my theory holds, and return it I shall. In my line of work, I can not afford to miss calls/texts.

Thanks for the tip about turning the phone off and back on. Lately I have been getting dropped calls after talking for several minutes. Today I had a dropped call and then could not call back. My text messages would not go through. I had no bars and no Edge icon. I turned the phone off and when I turned it back on the phone said no service. So I tried it again and suddenly I had bars and the voice messages my family said they left me were there on the phone. I hadn't thought of it being related to the update. Hopefully there will be another update that allows me to talk more than a few minutes without being cut off.
I haven't really paid attention to how many bars I have but I know I should have more bars then I have right now at home.
Love my phone but I would like to use it for more than an iPod.

I just purchased my Iphone 2 weeks ago. I have also been having issues with signal strength. I have no signal at home, or when I'm out. Prior to me getting the Iphone I was a Blackberry user. I had not problems what so ever with my Blackberry. I am now wondering if I made a mistake in switching carriers. I called AT&T and they told me to get a new sim. Did that, problem not solved. Called them back they told me to take the phone back to Apple. Did that, they gave me a new phone and problem still not solved. Please can anyone shed some light on this PROBLEM!!

I am glad I am not the only one. I am no longer able to get calls in the hospital where I used to be able to get any calls. I have also had power issues where the battery won't hold a charge. This has all happened since the update. I am restoring the phone now so I hope that will work, otherwise I will have to deal with it and hope more people have the same problem so that it can be fixed.
