I've installed the "Additional Fonts" from the MacOS X.4 disc (which includes Devanagari).

Hindi text now displays correctly in Safari, but NOT in FireFox.

Any thoughts?

As Tom mentioned, Firefox for OS X does not support Hindi yet. Most modern Mac applications that support non-Roman Unicode scripts do support Hindi and Safari, Pages, TextEdit and even the Mac's Finder are decent examples. If you look at Tom's website, you will see a very accurate note about how Mac OS X, even up to Tiger and Leopard, contains several bugs in its implementation of Hindi Unicode.
