Software Instruments Not Working

Hello, my Mac arrived yesterday and I'm new to GarageBand which may mean I'm simply having a blonde-moment and have just missed something.

But otherwise, some of my software instruments don't work.

I have GarageBand and the Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack installed. What will happen is that I'll create a new track, select one of the brass or woodwind instruments, and open the 'musical typing' window where I can play the notes. The problem is that when I play them, there is no sound. I'm tapping the keys and no sound is coming out. If I select a different instrument such as the grand piano, it works fine. It's only SOME of the Symphony Orchestra instruments (and the instruments which don't work change as well. I.e. - one minute the horns arent working, and the next minute they're fine and the woodwind instruments aren't).

Other than this the system/software runs perfectly.

I've taken some shots of something I've noticed that's different between the instruments that do and don't work. See below a picture of the details box which comes up to the bottom-right of your screen when you select an instrument (that is working!);

But this is what comes up for the instruments that aren't working;

Notice that under 'Instrument Generator' it says 'None', whereas in the first picture it had details. Also the drop down menu doesn't contain anything useful, and the colours have all changed to grey.

Any help would be much appreciated, otherwise Apple might get a frustrated phone call!

So I was having the same problem as you and I think I may have finally found a solution. Right when you open garageband click on one of the instruments that is not working, without clicking the details tab at all. After selecting an instrument open up the keyboard. It should play fine, then click on any other instruments that isn't working and it too should play fine. Once you have played each section (horns, strings, woodwinds) at least once you can then open the details tab and mess around with them. It is obviously annoying, but it seems like the only way the other instruments will show up in the generator. Hope this makes some sense and works for you.

In conclusion, test the instruments without pressing the details tab at all and they should work. Then afterwards you can press the details tab.

I'm getting exactly the same problem. When you close Garageband and reopen it the instruments work again. It's when you try and change instruments that the Instrument generator seems to forget what it's doing. It's always the horns and the woodwinds for me.

Incidentally, how do you manage with the MIDI lag? Even with 1MB memory on my Macmini, the lag is horrific and makes it really hard to record tracks in time with each other. Hate to say it but the lag is nowhere near as bad with Cakewalk on my PC.

Having similar problem. GB 8 and World Music Jam Pack. Tuned Percussion instrument generator there then gone. Reinstalled 3X. Even installed on another Mac...same problem... What to do? Conflicts? Don't have Logic, but do have Finale with their software instruments onboard. Tearing hair out... Please advise, anyone?

Greetings Centauri, also new to this and had same problem. I read somewhere in this forum that if you re-install your hard drive with your back up disks (that hopefully came with your computer) and when you get to the "customize" part of the process, you choose that and then choose "bundled files only" (if it offers you the option of choosing "GarageBand" then take it, but mine didn't and worked anyway) it may fix. It worked for me for the most part for Symphony and World Jampacks, although still missing my voices for some weird reason. Going to the istore tomorrow to search out the local GarageBand genius because I really don't have much hair left to tear out..! Hope it works for you.
Cheers

Yeah I really don't know what to do either. I wasn't expecting Apple products to fail on their own computers ! I'm having the same problem as well.

I installed Symphony Orchestra on my Mac-Mini that is operating on version 10.4.8 and all of the software instruments work fine without any problem!

next I installed Symphony Orchestra on my MacBook intel-core (Leopard OS) and I'm having the same exact problem as you guys - None of the software instruments work! This is so frustrating.

Does anyone else notice a difference in using either Leopard OSX or the previous OS, and the way Symphony Orchestra works? or any of the Jam Packs for that matter.

Thanks!
Josh

Yes my re-intstall worked for about 10 mins then the horns disappeared, then the woodwind. This really is unacceptable. If the software doesn't work it's not fit for purpose. If you could get support from Apple it might be nice rather than all of us struggling to try and find answers by trial and error. They must know that there is an issue???

Actually I misread. I thought the re-install being referred to was the Symphony Jam Pack DVD. When I actually re-installed the Garageband software from the OEM CDRoms that came with the Mac, it worked and continues to work fine. Strange the Jam Pack seemed to disable something in the original Garageband programme the first time it was installed. Still I'm glad it works now. It's a nice piece of software and the instruments sound great.
