Is there anyway to find your serial number without the original box? I think I found the guy who has my iPod, and if I can prove it's my serial number, then I win. But I have no box, and I think I don't have the receipt either. I got the "freebie" with my Macbook over a year ago... help?

You may also be able to obtain the serial number by going to this website
www.apple.com/support/manuals/ipod/
and selecting "Upload the serial number of my last connected iPod."
Of course if you have connected another iPod to your computer this won't work for you.

Hi,
I was able to find my serial number through my computer. Windows XP it was under ipod devices. The way I found it was running a search for the date that I downloaded itunes. It brought up all the files activated for that date. Open file with internet explorer.
Good luck!

You obviously didn't read all of the posts here. I agree with Bryan, it isn't realistic. And besides, do you really think that people who steal iPods have an iTunes account? If they are using them on computers not connected to the internet how would you track them?

I'm sure there is a way to link your ipods serial to your account.

What account? You think people who steal iPods then go on to create user accounts at the iTunes store?

Since it isn't necessary for any computer to be connected to the internet in order to use an iPod with iTunes, how would this work?

I disagree. It really isn't realistic to expect Apple to be able to track a stolen iPod for you.

A few scenarios;
1) Say my iPod goes missing... Apple finds the person who is using it. What do they do with that information? Give me his address? What if someone is hurt in the confrontation? Apple will carry some responsibility in that. Should they call the police & have the guy locked up? The guy who connects it probably isn't the guy who stole or found it - he probably just bought it at a pawn shop & now Apple has violated his privacy & possibly caused him legal trouble.

2) Someone gives an iPod to a friend or sells it on ebay or something. Then later, he has a falling out with that friend, or just decides he wants to be a jerk, so he reports the iPod stolen. What does Apple do in this case? Deactivate the iPod for the poor guy who legitimately received it? Notify the police (see above)? What?

See... it just isn't realistic. How about if we take responsibility for our own property and leave Apple to making great products? If you look into your homeowner's insurance policy, you will likely find that you can have your iPod covered there.

Cheers!
