Ipod Shuffle 1st Gen Won't Charge

ok, I have to confess that I'm probably an idiot but here is the scenario:

I got an Ipod shuffle 1st Generation as gift a couple of months ago and was so excited about it. I have two emacs, one an 800 MHZ and the other a 1 GHZ one. At first I tried to connectit to the 800 MHZ ( 10.2.x)one only to find out that the **** USB Connection on the side of the computer is not big enough ( there is not enough space around it ) for the ipod to be plugged in.

I read that one should get a USB extention and connect it using the extension cable. No Sweat. I ordered one only to find out that the computer ( itunes) does not even see it . So I blamed it on the computer and moved on to the 1GHZ emac. I was able to plug it in to the keyboard and the computer ( itunes ) recognizes it and one can move songs onto it.

But ....

It won't Charge.

A lot of other things are not Kosher either but we skip them for now.

So I again discounted the situation as being a problem with USB on the computer being a USB 1 and figured if I get one of those wall chargers , I am home free.

So I ordered a generic USB AC / Wall Charger.

The wall charger arrived and I was so excited that finally I will be able to use my ipod ( after almost two months of wait). I Plugged the ipod in and plugged it into the wall. They advertise that it should fully charge in two hours. So I waited two hours and then pulled it and tried the battery check button. Red cindicator came on. I figured it probably is not as advertised and plugged it in again and left it in overnight.

The next morning it still was not charged with battery test button still displaying red.

At this point I assumed that there is something wrong with the ipod.

So I got another 1st Gen ipod . Arrived charged. I downloaded my songs and enjoyed it for a couple of hours.

Then I plugged it in the wall charger overnight.

Next day it still was not charged.

So you see I am an idiot as I have no idea what I am doing.

The main question is :

Is ipod 1st gen suppose to work with emac 800mhz ( 10.2.highest) (USB 1) or for that fact emac 1 ghz ( 10.3.9) usb 1.1 ?

Can you see where my logic fails me? If so , please advise me.

Thank you in advance for your help.

emac 1ghz, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Some additional info that I did not mention before. When connected to the USB Port on side of the emac through a USB extention cable ( emac 1ghz ) , the green light on the front of the ipod, flashes on and off continously.

When connected to the usb port on the keyboard, it is recognized by itunes and can be accessed. If Connected to USB port on keyboard through the USB extension cord, same symptoms appear as when it is connected to usb port on the side of the computer through a USB extension cord. I checked continuity between the 4 pins on the USB extension cord to make sure they are not bad , and they are not . So somehow the USB extension cord is an issue by itself (

Hi Doggie,
It does not fit the primary port on the side of the computer. It is bigger than the opening. They suggest to connect it through a USB extension cable. I purchased a USB extension cable ( Non Apple) and when connected to the Primary USB port in that manner the green light will continuosly blink with no recognition by Itunes ( does not show or activate Itunes, which is what it does when plugged in on the keyboard USB ). I figured maybe the USB cable is of some specific type ( like crossed wires ) or not good, so I first verified continuity ( zero resistance pin by pin) and then visually verified that it in fact does connect in the correct manner ( not crossed) . I don't really think the fact that it is a non Apple cable should have anything to do with it but hey, I am at a loss here .

Connected to the Primary USB ( one of the 3 on the side of the computer) via a Non -Apple USB extension cord, It does not show up in Apple System Profiler. The green light on the front of the ipod continuosly flashes on and off.It does not show up in finder as a device either.

If connected directly to the keyboard USB , it shows up in itunes as an ipod, warns that the USB is 1.1 and do one should connect it to a USB 2 port ( if it has one, which it does not ), it works on itunes and you can move stuff to it and or delete stuff but it does not charge.

If I eject the device ( which is one suggestion made elsewhere and let it be connected that way to the keyboard usb, it still does not charge.

For the while that the battery was charged ( when it arrived) , it plays sings and works fine.

I have bought a wall charger ( Non Apple USB wall Charger , 110v to 5 volt) . It is suppose to work with ipod Shuffle ( I think ) . It does not charge it. And remember I have two of the ipods 1st gens now and the wall charger does not charge either. You see you are following in the correct logical though pattern. All these bits and pieces and tries is what makes the whole thing so much more aggravating .

Good USB cable makes a big different when connecting a high power usb device. I have the same bad experience when I used a $5 cable. Everything works fine with a better $10 cable. If that usb port works with other usb device, it is your cable.

About the AC/USB charger, the IPS need a special USB charger. If it is not "make for ipod shuffle", it won't work. If you see a solid or flashing yellow light, the charger is working. The charger need a special wiring to "wake" the IPS charging circuit up. The AC/USB charger problem has been heavily discussed here few years back.
