Cannot connect to iTunes Store

When I try to sign on to the iTunes store, I get this message,

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection was refused. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active and try again."

My network settings are correct. I ran network diagnostics and my internet connection is working normally. (In fact, I'm on the internet right now, correct?) I have the latest version of iTunes. I used Keychain First Aid and it found no problems. I tried unplugging my cable modem and wireless router, then replugging them and restarting my computer.

I sent an email to apple Support and they wrote back and told me to do the things I've already done. Am I missing something?
Another thing...when I tried to install an apple software update, I got this message: "Software update can't connect to server" I don't understand this. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I had the same issue and after being on the phone with them for over an hr and 40 minutes it turned out to be that my XP did NOT have "service pack 2" which is required for the itunes store. To find what Service Pack you follow the directions below:

Right click on My Computer. Go to Properties; Under System it should tell you what Service Pack the computer is using..... To update to service pack 2, you can go to the microsoft site. It's a free upgrade! *Note- I wouldn't download ALL of the updates needed, it may take forever! You can click on "Custom" and just select the Service Pack.

If that doesn't work... Sorry!

I have windows vista at work. Go to Start. Then click computer, and go to your C drive (or where ever iTunes is installed. Then go to Program Files > iTunes. Now you should see the iTunes application. Right click on it then click "properties." From there go to the Compatibility tab.

From there you should be able to choose to run iTunes in Windows XP SP2 Compatibility mode.
This fixed the iTunes Store problem for me.

Hopefully this will get fixed in Vista SP1.

I am getting the same error on every computer I attempt to access the iTunes store. I've tried three different computers, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and a Windows machine. I get this error on every one:

"We could not complete you iTunes Store request. The network connection was reset"

However, my son does not get this error and is able to log in.

I suspect that some user accounts are having problems, probably a back-end Data Base issue. Apple, please check the error logs. You are welcome to contact me directly if you need help with a repro.

Patiently waiting to give Apple some of my hard earned money...
