Cannot connect to iTunes Store

When I try to sign on to the iTunes store, I get this message,

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection was refused. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active and try again."

My network settings are correct. I ran network diagnostics and my internet connection is working normally. (In fact, I'm on the internet right now, correct?) I have the latest version of iTunes. I used Keychain First Aid and it found no problems. I tried unplugging my cable modem and wireless router, then replugging them and restarting my computer.

I sent an email to apple Support and they wrote back and told me to do the things I've already done. Am I missing something?
Another thing...when I tried to install an apple software update, I got this message: "Software update can't connect to server" I don't understand this. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yeah, I can get to the iTunes store to search, but I cannot purchase, cannot look at my account info or anything other than get to the store front/search.

"We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

Well it is, I am writing this right now, have access to email, etc. What's going on here? Frustrating.

iTunes 7.4.2 (4).

I finally got a little further with this, and now I get a different error:-

+"We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The requested resource was not found.+

+There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."+

As with others, this happens anywhere other than storefront/search. I was only noticing it on "Check for Purchases," but then tried my account info based on posts above, and now see it happens there too.

I run a MacG5 with OSX.4.10 and as of today I keep getting something similar about the network connection, except my iTunes gremlin states: "the network connection was reset"--which apparantly means I can't gain any access to the iTunes store. I've also run network diagnostics and have complete internet access to everything else. Restarting, unplugging, replugging ... nothing shakes the gremlin. Does anyone know anything about this?

For what it's worth: trying to subscribe to podcasts (every podcast I've tried so far) results in "we could not complete your iTunes Store reqest. The requested resource was not found."

Sniffing network traffic I see that a request for e.g.
http://ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?i d=265376069
seems to be returning a redirect to "/financeOverflow.xml" which is in turn returning "404 Not Found"

Additional details: I have an iPhone (not hacked). Doubt it's relevant but who knows.

Seems ther are thousands of us with this same problem. They are trying to tell us it is on our ends. This can't be. Apple, if you are reading these you need to look at the big picture here. I checked earlier today and there were over seven thousand people that could not connect to your store. Your suggested fixes do not work. How bout' fixing the problem from your end. The new Zune's aren't looking bad at this point!!!!!

I'm having the same problem on all of the VISTA machines on my network...I have loaded ITunes on my Windows Server 2003 box and it connects fine on the same LAN. I'm using the latest and greatest ITunes, but none of the Vista machines can connect to the ITunes store. I run a diagnostics on it and everything passes. I can go to the web and connect to the ITunes store fine and bring things up, just not through the ITunes application. I have gone over my firewall settings, etc like crazy and find no issues. Does anyone have any clue what is going on? I guess Apple doesn't want me to purchase any music online...I too have also emailed support.
