HOW TO TURN OFF THE IMAC SCREEN AND WATCH TV?

Anyone who have a tip here? I am interested as well.

You can set the screen saver to blank the screen and activate it with a hot corner.

I as well have found no way to turn off the iMac's display!

My setup is Mini DVI video adapter, S-Video cable, 27" flat screen TV with Overscan on in Options to fill screen. Using extended desktop I drag the DVD Viewer and Control panel to the TV's display. I dislike using the mirroring feature, because it fouls the iMac's resolution when watching a movie on the TV and working on the iMac's display.

The best I have been able to come up with is:
1. To somewhat dimm the iMac's display I hide the dock, put away (yellow button) all open windows then press F9 to dimm all except the menu bar.
2. Just use a dark colored desktop image!

Capaho can you give us more details, that doesn't work for me the screensaver plays on both displays?

Greg I also use Shades and SleepDisplay there great, but they also dimm / sleep both iMac display and TV?

Oh well, so much for that idea. I thought it was possible to play video out through the dvi port with iTunes or QuickTime independent of the monitor, as you can with an iPod.

try pressing control+shift and eject this works on leopard dont know if it will work for you

I have a macBook that connects to a 32" tv through the mini dvi-VGA cable, and I can turn off the monitor by dimming the screen down (F1) until it is black. That might work for you. idk

I have almost the same setup. All I do is drag itunes over to the tv screen, press play, then press full screan. My iMac screen goes black and it plays full screen on the tv.

It appears that there is no way to do what you want. Very disappointing to say the least.

The widget and stand-alone app suggested do not work on leopard(as per the author).

Short of physically putting something in front of the screen, we are stranded.

It looks like the only alternative is to use Front Row to play all movies. The secondary display will go black automatically.

eyetv 2 and 3 has the option to blank the other screen

three tv dongles one bought brand new and the other 2 were pc tv tuners i got from ebay and it all works perfect
eyetv 3 will even stream recordings to another mac on your local net

I wish they would let us know these things more directly in the manual- if Apple is all about power savings, it would be nice to always know the funtion to turn off the screen when you have to leave the computer running while doing major tasks...

You're a Genius, I looked it all over the internet, but couldn't find a way to turn off my screen, this works great!

this drives me nutz as well. i use a tshirt to cover the screen on the imac.

this seems like such a simply feature but i have yet to find a solution.

i use VLC most of the time and even if the front row or itunes trick worked most of my videos like .iso, .img, .mkv, etc... will not play on them or at least without mounting them first and that is not what i want to have to do and would not work at all with .mkv

i tried the control+shift eject thing on my imac leopard 10.5.3 and all it did was turn both screens black for a minute and then back to where they were 😟

its a shame there still is no solution to dual monitor issues - i.e. no switch off option that would control displays individually. apple, please do something about it!
