OS X tries to reboot every night

In the past week I've started keeping my mac on at night to download bit torrent files. For some reason, it reboots itself every night. This is incredibly annoying, and I have my mac secured, so it doesn't automatically log in. I've checked the console log to try and determine what's causing it to reboot, but I didn't find anything. Where can I find what is requesting the reboot so I can shut it off?

Thanks,
Todd

No, I did not, but unfortunately that's not the problem. I didn't notice it happening until after I installed a time zone patch that was suggested here.

Is there some sort of rootkit check program I can install that will see if this has done anything malicious to my system?

Thanks,
Todd

Ok,
I've looked at my system log and I don't see anything out of the ordinary. I fired my macbook up after I got home from work at 19:08, when I came home at 21:57 from dinner, it had tried to shut down. I've included the entire console log, there's nothing between 19:16 and 21:57. Can I turn on more verbose logging?

Well, if that's true, that would explain it. I said to look at the system.log, but I must say what you've posted looks more like system.log than console.log. Double check you got the right one: the system.log is considerably more verbose that console.log.

What I'm wondering is what evidence you have that the system is re-booting, since the log certainly doesn't show that.

Try this: open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window followed by a return:

last | egrep \(reboot\|^shutdown\)

Do those times correspond to when you think it is re-booting?

Oct 5, 2007 3:12 PM in response to Michael Conniff

I've included the log below. As far as evidence, if I'm running a program that doesn't exit automatically (IE without a prompt for confirmation), such as bittorrent, I have the prompt that the logout failed due to some applications not responding. If I leave Eclipse and Firefox open both of which exit without a confirmation, I'll wake up to the login screen. Once I log in, everything is initializing, spotlight is restarting, my Google notifiers aren't launched, my wireless isn't connected. The log below does not show an actual shutdown during the period I suspected, so perhaps I'm only being forced to log out.

Ah, OK. Well, you can check on logged in sessions with

last | grep console

Now that is interesting: found one in mine with
<pre>

michaelc console ibook Tue Oct 2 00:46 - crash (14:35)

</pre>
Usually it will just say the logout time there.

However, looking back at your posts, you said you applied a time zone patch. Are you sure that worked? Are you in NZ at the moment (your profile says Midwest)? I guess you must be, so you're 12 hours ahead of me. Anyway, let's just do a quick check on what you have. Copy and paste the following into the Terminal window, one line at a time, with a return after each line:

ls -l /private/etc/localtime
ls -l $( ls -l /private/etc/localtime | awk ' { print $NF } ')
zdump -v /etc/localtime | grep 2007

Copy and paste the result from the Terminal window to a post here.

The first two commands will help check the permissions on the timezone files, the last one will let you see if the changeover is now correctly set.

Oct 5, 2007 4:27 PM in response to Michael Conniff

Correct, I'm currently in NZ. I applied the patch, and my time has worked correctly. The symbolic link from the first command seems correct.

todd:~ toddnine$ ls -l /private/etc/localtime
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 36 Sep 30 14:44 /private/etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Pacific/Auckland

The second command gives me this

todd:~ toddnine$ ls -l $( ls -l /private/etc/localtime | awk ' { print $NF } ')
-rw-r--r-- 2 root wheel 882 Jul 18 11:54 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Pacific/Auckland

And the third gives me this
todd:~ toddnine$ zdump -v /etc/localtime | grep 2007
/etc/localtime Sat Mar 17 13:59:59 2007 UTC = Sun Mar 18 02:59:59 2007 NZDT isdst=1
/etc/localtime Sat Mar 17 14:00:00 2007 UTC = Sun Mar 18 02:00:00 2007 NZST isdst=0
/etc/localtime Sat Sep 29 13:59:59 2007 UTC = Sun Sep 30 01:59:59 2007 NZST isdst=0
/etc/localtime Sat Sep 29 14:00:00 2007 UTC = Sun Sep 30 03:00:00 2007 NZDT isdst=1

Since I'm paranoid, I've also downloaded and installed ClamXav. It hasn't found anything yet, but its only 1/2 way through a full system scan.

Yes, the permissions are OK, and the changeover times also look reasonable (although the changeover in London goes from 00:59:59 (GMT) to 02:00:00 (BST), and conversely from 01:59:59 (BST) to 01:00:00 (GMT). I thought the actual changeover happened at the same time everywhere. Maybe mine is wrong?

No harm in having ClamXav, I have it myself. But it is unlikely to find anything except possibly Windows viruses or corrupted Word macros.

Anyway, enough for today. I'll check again tomorrow when I get a chance.

Well, somehow a security option got checked. I don't remember changing it, I'm wondering if it was changed as a side effect of me changing settings with onyx. Here's how to fix it, open up system preferences, then go to security. Uncheck "Log out after X minutes of inactivity". I can't believe I didn't find this earlier! Oh well, just another thing I've learned about my mac

OS X tries to reboot every night
