File transfer via irda?

I've got a Powerbook G3 running Mac OS 9.2.1 with an irda port. I've also got a mobile phone, a Sony Ericsson K310i, with an irda port. I can make the Powerbook detect the Sony Ericsson without any difficulty but then I'm getting any further. Is there any way I can transfer files to and from the phone using irda? If so, how?

What sort of protocol does the phone support for transferring files ?

I had (and used) IrDA on my old PBG3 (Lombard) and PBG4 (500MHz) with each other, and with my Nokia phones.

I could file transfer between the PowerBooks, but I could never get it working with the phones, but it did support me using the mobiles over IrDA to establish a PPP dial-up connection (and a very slow one at that).

A USB cable might be your best bet, even though there might not be any drivers published by the phone manufacturer, many third party developers did produce them. I found info about what I needed on a professional digital photographers website discussion forum. Pro photo journalists were big PowerBook fans and needed some way to send their photos back to the office from anywhere in the world. This is before the days of 3G, satellite broadband and bluetooth.

Could one of the programs under the links in the "Phonebook editing and backup" paragraph of this web page possibly be made to work with your mobile phone?

Additionally, the aforementioned page contains a number of modem scripts. As Simon Teale indicated, a PPP connection to the Internet can often be established. This provided that the phone company has enabled data services. In such a case, you could perhaps try the standard Ericsson Infrared script (and set the modem control panel to ignore the dialling tone) to begin with.
